The Anaheim Ducks defeated the Boston Bruins at home last night, picking up a 4-3 win.
The Ducks opened the scoring on a power play about six minutes into the game, when Rickard Rakell slid a rebound past Linus Ullmark. Under two minutes later though, as a shot from Brandon Carlo went in off Nick Foligno, tying the game. Anaheim continued to press though and later in the frame, after Cam Fowler’s initial shot was stopped, Isac Lundestrom followed up to bury the rebound, putting Anaheim back ahead. Then only about a minute later, Troy Terry found Adam Henrique with a great pass and Henrique made no mistake, beating Ullmark to put the Ducks up 3-1 after 20 minutes.
Boston took over a bit in the second period, outshooting the Ducks 14-7. Then about midway though the frame, Carlo created more offense from the point, beating Gibson with a weak shot, on what was truthfully a pretty terrible goal to give up. Despite the bad goal though, Gibson did make some key saves throughout the frame to keep Anaheim ahead going into the intermission.
However, the Bruins drew even early in the third period, with David Pastrnak blowing a slapshot past Gibson. We saw the most even period of the game after that, with Boston outshooting Anaheim only 13-12, and neither team could capitalize despite some good chances being exchanged. However, with just 22 seconds to go, Trevor Zegras wristed a shot past Ullmark on a power play to put the Ducks ahead, and Anaheim held on for the 4-3 win.
Despite being outshot overall, it was a relatively strong game for Anaheim. The Ducks capitalized on two of their three power plays, which was a key factor, and it was a nice bounce back game after being shut out against the New York Islanders.
It was especially important Anaheim didn’t let this one slip away, given the Bruins were in the second-half of a back-to-back on the road. While the Ducks’ chances at the postseason are pretty slim at this point, the win at least keeps them fairly competitive, in 10th place in the Western Conference in points percentage. Their next game comes on Friday against the Vegas Golden Knights.
