The San Jose Sharks fell to the Vegas Golden Knights yesterday, losing 3-1.
The Sharks found themselves down right away, as Keegan Kolesar one-timed a shot past James Reimer just two minutes into the game. Things didn’t get much better for San Jose in the frame, getting just four shots on net and giving up 11 as Vegas generated tons of chances in the back half of the period, but it remained 1-0 after the opening frame.
Zach Sawchenko started the second period, as James Reimer left the game with a lower body injury. The Sharks did manage to draw even just two minutes into the second period, after Nick Bonino whiffed on a shot and the puck popped out right to Noah Gregor, who put the puck into a wide open net. San Jose only managed six shots in the period though and later in the frame, Jonathan Marchessault set up Reilly Smith on an odd-man rush, and Smith scored to put Vegas back ahead after 40 minutes.
The Golden Knights extended their lead early in the third period, as William Karlsson tipped a puck right to Smith, who buried his second of the game. San Jose really didn’t get much going to try to mount a comeback after that, as they fell 3-1 to the Golden Knights.
Once again, there was a ridiculously low number of shots put on goal by the Sharks, with San Jose registering just 17 shots overall. Over the Sharks’ last three games, they’ve managed only 57 shots, a bleak average of 19 shots per game.
James Reimer’s injury is another pretty brutal loss for the Sharks, who are now without both goalies and two of their top defenders, along with a few top-nine forwards. We're likely to see Zach Sawchenko make his first NHL start in the near future.
Vegas’ victory also marked Peter DeBoer’s 500th career win, and it’s noteworthy that he did it against his former team.
San Jose’s next game comes on Saturday against the Nashville Predators.
