The Anaheim Ducks fell short against the Vegas Golden Knights yesterday, losing 5-4.
The Ducks opened the scoring about five minutes into the game, as Jakob Silfverberg just threw the puck on net and it found a way past Laurent Brossoit. The lead didn’t last long though, with Ben Hutton tying the game against his former team with a nice shot. The period wasn’t overly eventful after the pair of goals, and the teams headed into intermission tied 1-1.
Just 18 seconds into the second period, Jonathan Marchessault took a pass from William Karlsson and beat John Gibson, putting Vegas back ahead. While Nicolas Deslauriers tied the game with a powerful slapshot soon after, Nicolas Roy slid a puck under Gibson under 1:30 after that, as the Golden Knights took back the lead.
Then just a few minutes later, Alex Pietrangelo’s point shot hit Roy and fell down right onto his stick and Roy capitalized, scoring his second of the game. Vegas wasn’t done there, with William Carrier putting a pass to Michael Amadio, who tapped in the puck, and with four goals in under 10 minutes to start the second period, Vegas had a 5-2 lead. Trevor Zegras scored a goal late in the frame on a power play, but the Golden Knights still took a 5-3 lead into the second intermission.
The Ducks actually did generate some good chances in the front half of third period and Troy Terry managed to pull Anaheim back to within a goal on a power play. Anaheim couldn’t get as many chances after that to tie it though, and only had seven shots in the frame overall, as Vegas hung on for the 5-4 win.
The Ducks managed only 24 shots in the loss and weren’t the better team. With the loss, the Ducks have gone just 2-3-0 on their road trip and 3-6-0 since the All-Star Break. They’re now down to 11th in the Western Conference in points percentage.
While the Ducks have been very poor defensively at times over the last stretch of games and John Gibson didn’t get a lot of help yesterday, it marks the sixth time in the last seven games in which he’s allowed at least four goals.
Anaheim’s next game comes tomorrow against the San Jose Sharks.
