My Takeaways:

Alex Ovechkin Ties Jagr –Ovechkin scored two goals last night. One at 5v5 and the other was an EN. The second goal was number 766 and that officially ties him with the great Jaromir Jagr for 3rd-all time. Ovechkin’s first was a great all-around effort. Here is the clip of his first goal:

His second goal of the night:

Nice lil touch pass from Tom Wilson there. I know its an empty netter but a goal is a goal and we will take them! Had he missed that shot, the Flames could have very well tied the game. They scored to make it 5-4 with 20 seconds left.

Ovechkin had a pretty solid game last night. He didn’t have a ton of shots, but he did have six chances registered. I think all three or four of his shots on the power play in the third period were blocked. The Flames did a really great job not just covering Ovechkin but blocking anything that came off his stick on the PP. Congrats on the big night, Ovi!

More Milestones – This was Ovechkin and Backstrom’s 1000th game played together. They are the 9th pair in NHL history to do so. What an iconic duo. Backstrom recorded 1A last night and he is now 2-points shy of reaching 1000 career points. He will be the 6th Swedish born player in NHL history to ever reach 1000 career points. Guys in front of him in order from 1st to 5th are Sundin, Alfredsson, Lidstrom, H. Sedin, and D. Sedin.

Conor Sheary – Conor Sheary is having himself a March! In his last four games, Sheary has 4G-2A-6P. Last night, Sheary opened the scoring for the Caps. Sheary was tied with Ovechkin with six scoring chances on the night, he led the team with 5 total shots, and he was second on the team with ixG. Sheary has been a consistent beast for the Caps on the third line and on the 2nd PP unit. For 1.5M a year cap hit, hes a steal!

Honorable Mention – Nick Jensen recorded 3 assists on the night which matches career high for him. He earned 2nd star of the game.

Final Reaction – The Caps were largely outplayed against the Flames who were finishing up a back-to-back. The Caps played fine, but I was impressed with the Flames overall. The flames consistently got the puck in deep and just outworked the Caps in the corners. They did a great job cycling and moving the puck in the offensive zone. This largely led to their massive advantage in "high danger chances" on the night. They likely deserved to win this game more times than not. To the Caps credit, they hung in there and battled back. Once down 2-goals and again after allowing the Flames to take a 4-3 lead in the third. This was a good test for the Caps against one of the more elite teams in the league.

Next Up the Capitals play @ Edmonton tonight for the second half of their back-to-back. We have two back-to-backs against EDM this year? Not cool.

Thanks for reading and Go Caps!
