The Carolina Hurricanes held on to beat the Philadelphia Flyers today, taking a 3-1 win.
The Hurricanes had a strong first period, outshooting the Flyers 15-10. Despite putting a lot of shots on Martin Jones they couldn’t convert though, and the game remained scoreless through 20 minutes.
Steven Lorentz got Carolina on the board in the second period, taking a pass from Derek Stepan and banking a puck in off Jones. The Flyers responded later though and after Frederik Andersen couldn’t handle a dump in, Derick Brassard got to the rebound first and tied the game before the end of the frame.
In the third period, Carolina really limited chances for the Flyers, allowing just five shots against. Then with under four minutes to go, Jordan Martinook tipped in what would’ve been a pretty harmless shot from Vincent Trocheck, giving Carolina the 2-1 lead. While Philadelphia tried to press late, the Hurricanes didn’t give up much and added an empty net goal, taking a 3-1 win.
The Hurricanes put together a solid game, and an especially strong third period. The win marks the fourth in a row for Carolina, who swept their homestand with wins over the Pittsburgh Penguins, Seattle Kraken, Colorado Avalanche, and now the Flyers.
Frederik Andersen was solid in his first start in nine days, making 28 saves in the win. The Hurricanes have the luxury of a great backup in Antti Raanta, but it’s good to see Andersen win in his return.
Derek Stepan’s assist on Lorentz’s goal was also his 500th career NHL point. Despite having a pretty small role and not always getting into the lineup, Stepan has been a really good depth forward for the Hurricanes this season and is scoring at a pace of 14 goals and 30 points per 82 games.
The Hurricanes will be back in action tomorrow against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
