The Carolina Hurricanes came up short against the Pittsburgh Penguins today, falling 4-2.

Carolina had a relatively strong opening frame, limiting the Penguins to just six shots. However, Teddy Blueger found Brian Boyle with a nice pass in front and Boyle managed to open the scoring, putting Pittsburgh up after the first period.

There were more shots exchanged in the second frame, in what was a fairly even period. The lone goal came when Danton Heinen tipped in a point shot from Mike Matheson about halfway through the period, extending the lead to 2-0.

Carolina finally got on the board about five minutes into the third period, as Brett Pesce took a pass in a good spot and ripped a shot past Tristan Jarry, cutting the lead to a single goal. The Hurricanes dominated the final frame after that, outshooting the Penguins 20-4 in the period. Despite the Hurricanes pressing to tie it though, Sidney Crosby buried an empty net goal and while Sebastian Aho did score to pull the game back to within one once again, Zach Aston-Reese added another empty netter to secure a 4-2 Penguins win.

You can’t be upset with Carolina’s effort here, putting 43 shots on goal and limiting chances for the Penguins. They dominated the final frame but just couldn’t manage to claw back and they realistically deserved a better fate.

With the loss, Carolina’s four-game win streak comes to an end. Again though, it was the second half of a back-to-back being played on the road against a good team.

The Hurricanes will now have a break until Thursday, when they face the Toronto Maple Leafs.
