The New York Islanders’ three-game winning streak came to an end last night, losing to the Washington Capitals in a shootout.
Even though the Islanders actually outshot the Capitals in the first period, it wasn’t an overly strong opening frame. Anthony Mantha scored a little over midway through the period off a pass from Evgeny Kuznetsov and the Islanders entered the intermission down a goal.
Brock Nelson responded about five minutes into the second period though, putting a rebound past Vitek Vanecek. Then after the Islanders put together a stronger period where the Capitals were limited to just seven shots, Josh Bailey made some nice moves to get to the front of the net, before dishing the puck to Kyle Palmieri, who put New York ahead with about three minutes to go in the frame.
The Capitals tied the game midway through the third period, however, as Axel Jonsson-Fjallby scored his first NHL goal off a pass from Dmitry Orlov. Then only five minutes later, Alex Ovechkin ripped home a shot off a faceoff, which gave him sole possession of third place on the all-time NHL goals list, putting the Capitals back ahead. However, Anders Lee came up clutch for the Islanders to continue his hot streak, putting in a rebound to tie the game with only two minutes left.
After the Islanders were completely outplayed in overtime but managed to escape, the game went to a shootout. After many misses in what turned into an eight-round event, Anthony Mantha beat Semyon Varlamov and then Anders Lee was stopped, securing a Capitals win.
It was a fairly competitive game, with New York coming up just short.
It’s good to see the Islanders scoring a bit more, with this being their fifth game in a row scoring at least three goals. Both Anders Lee and Kyle Palmieri also continued their hot streak, each scoring yet again in the loss.
That said, it’s another scenario where the Islanders got through regulation but then couldn’t get the extra point in overtime or a shootout. They don’t have the speed or enough players with high-end agility or offensive talent to get much going off a rush in overtime.
New York is still playing better hockey though, and have still picked up seven of a possible eight points over the last four games. Their next game comes tomorrow against the New York Rangers.
