The Carolina Hurricanes lost their fourth game in a row tonight, falling 2-0 to the New York Rangers.
The Hurricanes started really well with an excellent first period, outshooting the Rangers 14-3. They couldn’t convert, however, and the game remained scoreless after 20 minutes.
Carolina continued to dominate in the second period, throwing 15 more shots at Alexandar Georgiev. However, Chris Kreider opened the scoring for the Rangers with about five minutes remaining in the second period, tipping in Jacob Trouba’s point shot to send New York to intermission with the lead.
It was more of the same in the final frame, with Carolina outshooting New York by a huge margin again and continuing to generate a ton of chances. However, they somehow still didn’t manage to score and eventually, Frank Vatrano iced the game with an empty net goal with under a minute to go.
Yet again, the Hurricanes dominated their opponent but just couldn’t get the win and they’re now on a four-game losing streak. Take out the loss to the Washington Capitals (where they actually were outplayed) and between the losses against the Pittsburgh Penguins, Toronto Maple Leafs and then the Rangers today, they outshot their opponents 123-61, scoring only four goals.
It’s not the first time this season we’ve seen this trend emerge, where they can dominate most of the game but just not convert. Even if they’ve deserved a better result, they’re not getting it and if they can’t figure things out quick, they’re going to start really losing ground in the standings.
On a positive note, Tony DeAngelo returned to action to play his first game since Feb. 21, following a midsection injury. He was eased back in a little bit, getting 17:38 of ice time.
Carolina’s next game comes on Tuesday against the Tampa Bay Lightning.
