The Carolina Hurricanes made one major trade before the deadline yesterday, acquiring forward Max Domi from the Columbus Blue Jackets as part of a three-team deal.
The Florida Panthers were also involved to help retain salary and in all, the Hurricanes acquired Domi and defenseman Tyler Inamoto, giving up prospect Aidan Hreschuk and forward Egor Korshkov in the process.
Domi is 27 years old and is set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer. This season, he's scored nine goals and 32 points in 53 games with the Blue Jackets, a pace of 14 goals and 50 points per 82 games.
Personally, I really like this trade for the Hurricanes. Domi isn’t without flaws in his game but he can certainly create offense. He’s three years removed from scoring 28 goals and 72 points with the Montreal Canadiens and though he’s probably not going to reach that level of production again, he can still be a very productive top-nine forward. He can likely be counted on to maintain a 50-point pace and if paired with some of Carolina’s top forwards, he could really up his numbers.
He’s still dealing with an injury at the moment but upon his return, Domi should provide a strong option for the wing. Especially with Jordan Martinook out, the move makes sense.
With Domi on an expiring deal, there's no sort of commitment for the Hurricanes beyond the season, though if he ends up being a fit, there's always at least the possibility of an extension. He only just turned 27 years old and while it seems unlikely that he'll be with the team long-term, you never know.
Then factor in what the Hurricanes gave up and they come away looking good here. They only moved a prospect who was taken near the end of the third round and Egor Korshkov, who’s 25 years old and is back playing in Russia.
Domi could certainly be used as a top-six winger and to get him at that price is a win for the Hurricanes. There's a lot of potential upside here if Domi finds chemistry playing with the likes of Sebastian Aho, Martin Necas, Andrei Svechnikov, Teuvo Teravainen or Vincent Trocheck and to give up so little makes this a really worthwhile move.
It remains to be seen as to what role he ends up playing within the forward group but this deal is a win for Carolina.
