The New York Islanders picked up wins over the Ottawa Senators and Detroit Red Wings this week, continuing a recent stretch of strong play.
The Islanders have gone 7-1-1 over their last nine games, picking up 15 of a possible 18 points. While they have faced a relatively low quality of competition over the stretch, it’s still been an impressive last couple weeks nonetheless.
In their two games this week, the Islanders outscored the Senators and Red Wings by a combined total of 8-2. It’s in line with the rest of the stretch, given that the Islanders have been posting better results at both ends.
They’ve been scoring a lot more, with 33 goals over the nine games, driven largely by the likes of Anders Lee and Brock Nelson. Lee has scored 10 goals and 16 points over his last 10 games, while Nelson has 10 goals over his last 11 games as well.
New York has also allowed just 16 goals over the last nine games, keeping their opponent to two goals or less in seven of those matchups. They’ve been continuing to look more like the strong defensive team we had expected to see coming into the year.
The Islanders will be without forward Cal Clutterbuck for the remainder of the season though, with the forward needing shoulder surgery. Defenseman Scott Mayfield is likely done for the season as well, given that he’ll be out 4-6 weeks with a lower-body injury.
Regardless, it’s almost certainly too late for New York to mount any sort of a comeback in the standings. At the very least though, it is nice to see the team playing more up to their ability and it does build some hope that they could potentially rebound next season if some moves are made.
