The Los Angeles Kings’ first round series against the Edmonton Oilers is now tied up, following a 6-0 blowout loss in Game 2 last night.
The Kings once again opened the game with a pretty strong first period, outshooting the Oilers. They had some good chances and threw 14 shots on Mike Smith, and despite multiple close calls, the game remained scoreless after 20 minutes.
Once again though, Los Angeles fell victim to the Oilers’ power play in the second period, with Leon Draisaitl putting the Oilers ahead with a one-timer just over a minute into the frame. Then only about four minutes later, Darnell Nurse burned the Kings with a shorthanded goal, with his shot deflecting off Arthur Kaliyev’s stick and past Jonathan Quick. Edmonton completely outplayed Los Angeles through the rest of the period, outshooting the Kings 19-9, and Ryan McLeod later tipped in a point shot to make it a 3-0 game through two periods.
Things continued to go south for Los Angeles in the final frame. Sean Durzi took a swing at a puck in mid-air and ended up batting it into his own net a few minutes into the period and then just 21 seconds after that Jesse Puljujarvi took a pass from Connor McDavid and beat Quick, making it a 5-0 game. Despite the Oilers managing just five shots in the frame, they struck again later as Evander Kane capitalized on a power play and the Oilers cruised to a 6-0 win.
Following a pretty decent first period, it was obviously a rough final 40 minutes for the Kings. They were also sunk by their special teams, giving up two power play goals and a shorthanded goal, along with going 0-for-4 on the power play. Edmonton’s offense is deadly and the outing was a reminder as to how dangerous the Oilers can be when they get rolling.
Though the Kings had 30 shots, they didn’t get a ton of quality chances against Mike Smith throughout the night. Smith nearly allowed some pretty rough goals and despite the shutout and some decent saves, the Kings should be able to capitalize going forward in the series.
Despite the tough Game 2 loss, the Kings' win to open the series leaves things even through two games, heading back home. Game 3 takes place in Los Angeles on Friday.
