Rating the Moves on Day 2 of the NHL Draft
Trade: The Capitals trade goalie Vitek Vanecek and No. 46 pick to Devils for pick Nos. 37 and 70
Nuts and Bolts: Vanecek was 20-12-6 with a .909 save percentage. He is a restricted free agent.
Why the Devils want to make the trade: Devils are looking to upgrade their goaltending. That's a must-do if they want to make the playoffs in the Metropolitan
Why the Capitals want to make the trade: Looking to move up several spots in the draft and rid themselves of a player who didn't meet expectations.
Analysis: Vanecek is still only 26 and could end up being a helpful addition. Decent roll of the the dice for minimal payment
Winner: Devils
Red Wings/Blues
Trade: Red Wings acquire goalie Ville Husso from the St. Louis Blues for a third-round pick and then re-sign him to a three-year deal worth $4.75 million per season.
Nuts and Bolts: Husso was heading to the free agent marketplace, but opted for the sure thing with Detroit. GM Steve Yzerman continues to say that he wants to improve his team during this offseason.
Why the Red Wings wanted to make this deal: Alex Nedeljkovic looked worn down in the second half of the season. Husso might share the job with him, or he might end up as the No. 1 goalie.
Why the Blues wanted to make the deal: They are happy to get a third-round pick because they were going to lose Husso for nothing.
Analysis: This should significantly upgrade Detroit's goaltending
Winner: Red Wings
Hurricanes/Flyers
Trade: The Carolina Hurricanes traded defenceman Tony DeAngelo and a seventh-round pick to the Philadelphia Flyers for three draft picks: a 2022 fourth-round pick (No. 101 overall), a 2023 third-round pick, and second-round pick in 2024 from the Flyers in the .
Nuts and Bolts: The Hurricanes gave DeAngelo permission to contact other teams and determine who was interested. After the deal was done, DeAngelo signed a two-year, $10 million contract with Philadelphia after the trade.
Why the Flyers made the deal: They were looking to infuse some skill into their blue line, just in case Ryan Ellis' injury rehabilitation moves into next season. DeAngelo is coming off a strong statistical season.
Why the Hurricanes made the deal: They couldn't reach an agreement on a contract extension. GM Don Waddell said they made an effort as late as yesterday.
Analysis: His skill fits nicely with the Flyers. But not every in Philadelphia is happy about the deal because DeAngelo has kicked off the New York Rangers an incident regarding a teammate. He was suspended as a junior player for violating the OHL policy on "homophobic, racist, and sexist language" He has a history of antagonism with fans on social media.
Winner: From a hockey only standpoint, the Flyers can win this deal. But let's see what John Tortorella thinks about DeAngelo first.
Sharks/Predators
Trade: The Predators sent center Luke Kunin to the Sharks for John Leonard and a third-round pick to the Predators.
Nuts and Bolts: Mike Grier has hit the ground running as the Sharks' new GM. He helped the teams offense with the addition of Kunin who had 13 goals last season. Kunin can provide secondary scoring.
Why the Predators made the trade: Clearing up more cap space to pay Filip Forsberg?
Why the Sharks made the trade: Making an effort to upgrade the roster. Kunin capable of contributing 16-18 goals per season.
Analysis: Poile has to be feeling some pressure to get Forsberg signed. Kunin is a serviceable player. But every dollar counts when you are paying top players big money.
Winner: Sharks
