The Columbus Blue Jackets have extended the services of defenseman Nick Blankenburg with the club.
Terms of the contract are two seasons beginning this one, and finishing after the 2023-2024 season. His cap hit is $825K for the duration of time. He will be receiving $800K for 22-23, and $850K in salary for 23-24. This walks him to his arbitration rights as a 26 year old undrafted restricted free agent.
Blankenburg served as the captain of the Michigan Wolverines, having teammates including Owen Power (BUF), Matthew Beniers (SEA), Luke Hughes (NJD), Brandon Brission (VGK), and Kent Johnson (CBJ). The Wolverines fell short in the semifinals of the Frozen Four for the NCAA Mens Ice Hockey Championship. He had 29 points (14 goals, 15 assists) in his final 38 games aka the senior year.
In 7 outings with the Blue Jackets, Blankenburg had 1 goal and 2 assists for 3 points, holding a -3 rating and 4 penalty minutes. He brings youth and chemistry on the defense. Blankenburg and KJ were together, meanwhile Blankenburg, Johnson, and Werenski are also Michigan alumni.
