The Carolina Hurricanes announced today that they’ve signed defenseman William Lagesson to a one-year contract, which carries a $750,000 cap hit.

Lagesson is 26 years old and has played 60 career NHL games over the last three seasons. This past year, the defenseman played primarily in the NHL. He managed four assists in 30 games with the Edmonton Oilers (and also played 11 games with the AHL’s Bakersfield Condors), before being traded and playing three games with the Montreal Canadiens.

It’s unlikely that Lagesson earns a large role with the Hurricanes, given the team’s defensive depth. That said, he could possibly be called into action with injuries and has a chance to earn a roster spot as a spare defender.
