It’s been an awful couple of months for Hockey Canada for reasons we all know. The whole country is wondering how the organization could let what’s gone on happen repeatedly and provincial federations, politicians and fans alike are demanding answers. Will we ever get those answers? Who knows, but what we do know is that we’ll get a do over for last December’s attempted World Junior Championships.
The tournament will kick off this Tuesday with Czechia taking on Slovakia at 2:00 PM, Latvia playing Finland at 6:00 PM and the USA battling Germany at 10:00 PM. Canada will play its first game on Wednesday against Latvia, then play again on Thursday against Slovakia, Saturday facing Czechia and wrap up its round-robin stage against Finland on Monday August 15th. Quarterfinals are scheduled for Wednesday the 17th, semis for Friday the 19th and the medals will be handed out on Saturday the 20th.
This morning at the Canadian practice, Joshua Roy was on the left side of captain Mason McTavish and Connor Bedard on the top line. It looks like the Canadiens’ prospect is going to get plenty of opportunities to shine. As for Riley Kidney, he found himself on the extras line, but that doesn’t mean he won’t see any action, after all, they’ve got 4 round robin games before the medal round, so ice-time is bound to be shared around.
Les derniers mois ont été affreux pour Hockey Canada pour les raisons que l’ont connait. Le pays en entier se demande comment l’organisation a pu laisser les choses se dérouler ainsi et les fédérations provinciales, les politiciens et les fans demandent tous des réponses. Est-ce qu’on obtiendra ces réponses un jour ? Qui sait… Mais pour l’heure on sait qu’on aura une reprise de la tentative de championnat mondial junior de décembre dernier.
Le tournoi se mettra en branle mardi avec des matchs mettant aux prises la Tchequie et la Slovaquie a 2 :00 PM, la Lettonie et la Finlande à 6 :00 PM et les États-Unis et l’Allemagne à 10 :00 PM. Le Canada jouera son premier match mercredi contre la lettonie, avant d’en découdre avec la Slovaquie jeudi, la Tchequie samedi et de conclure son tournoi à la ronde face à la Finlande lundi le 15 aout. Les quarts de finales se tiendront mercredi le 17, les demis finales vendredi le 19 et les médailles seront remises samedi le 20.
Ce matin à la pratique de l’équipe nationale, Joshua Roy se trouvait à la gauche du capitaine Mason McTavish et de Connor Bedard sur le premier trio. On dirait bien que l’espoir du CH aura une chance en or de se faire valoir. Quant à Riley Kidney, il se retrouvait sur la ligne des extras, mais ça ne veut pas dire pour autant qu’il ne jouera pas. Après tout, le tournoi à la ronde compte 4 matchs en plus de la ronde des médailles, alors il y a fort à parier que le temps de glace sera partagé.
