It might seem like it went by quite fast, but Cole Caufield is currently in the last year of his entry level contract and is therefore already eligible to sign a contract extension. The reason why it went by so fast is because the first year of it was burnt when he joined the Habs in the tail end of the 2020-2021 season after the Wisconsin Badgers were eliminated. As a result, even though he’s technically played 2 years of pro hockey, he’s only got 77 games of experience in the NHL.
Still, many fans are already enamored with the young sniper and would gladly give him the moon right away. That’s probably why there are many calls on social media for Kent Hughes to get an extension done as soon as possible. I’d be rather surprised if that was to happen before the end of the season. To be fair, Caufield’s last season, just like the team’s, was underwhelming until there was a change at the helm of the Sainte-Flanelle.
I think both Caufield and Hughes want to benefit from a full season of stability to see what the youngster can do and that makes perfect sense. Before committing both significant term and money to a player, you’ve got to know what he can deliver and from Caufield’s point of view, if he lights up the lamp with regularity, he knows his value will go up.
Typically, a player coming off an ELC deal will go down one of two ways, he’ll either be signed to a bridge deal, a kind of show me what you’ve got deal, or a long-term one. The way I see it, Hughes will want to sign Caufield long-term, just like Nick Suzuki was and I fully expect that to be the number one item on his “to-do list” once the Canadiens’ season is over. At that time 4 big contracts will be expiring (although the players may be traded before the trade deadline), those of Jonathan Drouin, Evgeni Dadonov, Jake Allen and Paul Byron meaning that Hughes will have room to work with under the cap.
So, sit tight and watch what Caufield can do with a full season under the tutelage of Martin St-Louis, there’s no rush to sign him right now and it will be done long before he becomes a restricted free agent and can be eligible to receive an offer sheet from another team.

Cependant, plusieurs fans sont déjà littéralement amoureux du jeune franc-tireur et serait prêt à lui donner la lune tout de suite. C’est probablement pourquoi plusieurs sur les médias sociaux s’impatientent et réclame que Hughes règle le dossier aussitôt que possible. Pour être honnête, la dernière saison de Caufield, tout comme celle de l’équipe au complet, n’a pas été impressionnante avant le changement d’entraîneur.
Je crois que tant Caufield que Hughes veut voir ce que le jeune homme peut faire pendant une saison pleine sous la gouverne de St-Louis et ça fait du sens. Avant de s’engager à long-terme et pour un gros montant avec un joueur, il importe de vraiment savoir ce qu’il peut faire. Et du point de vue de Caufield, s’il fait briller la lumière rouge régulièrement cette année, il sait que sa valeur ne fera que monter.
Typiquement, un joueur qui termine son contrat d’entrée emprunte un de deux chemins, celui d’un contrat de transition, une occasion pour lui de faire ses preuves, ou une entente à plus long terme. Selon moi, Hughes voudra signer Caufield à long terme, tout comme Nick Suzuki l’a été et je crois sincèrement que ce sera le premier item sur sa liste de chose à faire quand la saison du CH sera terminée. À ce moment-là, 4 gros contrats seront venus à échéance (quoique certains quitteront peut-être avant la date limite des transactions), ceux de Jonathan Drouin, Evgeni Dadonov, Jake Allen et Paul Byron, ce qui veut dire que Hughes aura les coudées franches sous le plafond salarial.
Donc, soyez patient, profitez du spectacle et voyez ce que Caufield peut faire lors d’une saison complète sous Martin St-Louis, il n’est pas argent de le signer et ce sera fait bien avant qu’il devienne un agent libre avec restriction et qu’il puisse recevoir une offre hostile.
