Slafkovsky Wins Player of the Year Award in Slovakia |

It’s no secret, Juraj Slafkovsky had himself quite a year and last night, Hockey Slovakia recognized that by giving him 3 awards. He was named player of the year, best forward and best player under 20 years old. The last 2 were kind of a foregone conclusion since he was named player of the year across the board, but they are still worth mentioning. At just 18 years old, Slafkovsky became the youngest player ever to claim the player of the year award in Slovakia.
Speaking of Slovakia, the country was facing-off against Canada last night at the World Junior Championships and it was obvious that it really could have done with recent NHL draft picks Slafkovsky, Simon Nemec and Filip Mesar. The Canadians showed no mercy, obliterating the Slovaks 11-1 in what was a one-sided affair all the way through. Habs prospect Riley Kidney, who was the 13th forward in the game against Latvia was a healthy scratch. As for Joshua Roy, he started the game on the first line, but he was demoted by the 3rd period. It’s not that he isn’t playing well, after all he did gather a goal and 3 assists, but he looked like the odd man out on a line with Bedard and McTavish. The chemistry between those 2 forwards is undeniable and they were always looking for each other on the ice rather than making use of Roy. Understandably, Dave King decided to try and see if another forward from his stacked roster would fit in better with them. We’ll see where he lands in the line-up for tomorrow’s clash with Czechia.
Earlier in the day, Canada’s next opponent Czechia had a date with Finland, and it was quite a battle which Finland won 4-3 in the shootout. On the Finnish side, it was a quiet game for both Habs’ prospects Nurmi and Kapanen, but it was an eventful one for Jan Mysak on the Czech side. The Canadiens’ 2nd round pick in 2020 finished the game with a goal and an assist in nearly 25 minutes of ice-time, second only to defenseman David Jiricek. He also added a goal in the shootout, being the only Czech player to beat Finland’s Merilainen.
There are no Habs’ prospects involved in today’s action in Edmonton as Sweden took on Austria at 2:00 PM and the Slovakia takes on Latvia at 6:00 PM.

Il a été nommé joueur de l’année, meilleur avant et meilleur joueur de moins de 20 ans. Les 2 derniers étaient évidents comme il a gagné le meilleur joueur toute catégories confondues, mais ça vaut quand même la peine de les mentionner. À seulement 18 ans, Slafkovsky devient le plus jeune joueur à recevoir le titre de joueur de l’année en Slovaquie.
Parlant de la Slovaquie, elle se mesurait au Canada hier au Championnat Mondial Junior et il était vraiment evident que ses joueurs récemment repêchés lui manquaient, elle aurait eu bien besoin de Slafkovsky, Simon Nemec et Filip Mesar. Les Canadiens n’ont montré aucune pitié, démolissant les Slovaques par la marque de 11-1 dans ce qui a été un vrai match à sens unique. L’espoir du CH Riley Kidney, qui avait été le 13e attaquant la veille, n’était pas de l’alignement. Quant à Joshua Roy, il a commencé le match sur le premier trio, mais il a perdu son poste en 3e période. Ce n’est pas qu’il ne joue pas bien, après tout il a amassé un but et 3 passes, mais il était le joueur de trop sur la ligne de Bédard et McTavish. La chimie est telle entre ces deux-là, qu’ils ne font que se chercher sur la glace et n’utilisent pas Roy. C’est donc compréhensible que Dave King ait décidé de voir si un autre attaquant dans son alignement talentueux serait plus à sa place avec eux. On verra ou il se retrouvera dans l'alignement pour le match de demain contre la Tchéquie.
Plus tôt dans la journée l’adversaire de demain des Canadiens, la Tchéquie avait rendez-vous avec la Finlande, ce fut toute une bataille ultimement remportée 4-3 par la Finlande en fusillade. Du côté finlandais, se fut un match tranquille pour les espoirs du CH Nurmi et Kapanen, mais ce fut un match bien rempli pour Jan Mysak, le capitaine de la Tchéquie. Le choix de 3e ronde du Tricolore en 2020 a terminé le match avec un but et une basse en près de 25 minutes de temps de jeu, le plus utilisé derrière le défenseur David Jiricek. Il a également ajouté un but en fusillade, étant le seul Tchèque à déjouer le gardien finlandais Merilainen.
Aucun espoir du CH ne sautera sur la glace aujourd’hui alors que la Suède a affronté l’Autriche à 2:00 PM et la Slovaquie affrontera la Lettonie à 6 :00 PM.
