While you can call Kirby Dach’s acquisition a gamble on Kent Hughes part since there’s a lot riding on the young center getting his groove back, you can hardly call Monahan’s trade a gamble. After all, he cost nothing to the Canadiens’ GM, in fact this is pretty much like winning a fee playing the lotto. For future considerations, Hughes gets a player that has battled injuries for years and who’s on an expiring deal.
According to Flames’ GM Brad Treiliving, Monahan’s recovery is going well, and he should be ready to play this season. As for Monahan, he said he’s now skating 4 times a week and feels extremely well in his Zoom call on Thursday night. Best case scenario, his hips are indeed fixed, and he has a good season making him a good target for contending teams at the trade deadline, allowing Hughes to flip him for another draft pick. Worst case scenario? He’s still not fully healthy, barely plays, and becomes an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season. Whichever way you look at it, the Habs got a first-round pick for a risk-free experiment.
It's well known by now that the Canadiens’ upcoming season will be another challenging one, no Carey Price means a year of Allen and Montembeault sharing the workload in net, and we’ve seen where that landed the team last season. The blue line will be young and there will be mistakes a plenty, but Monahan’s presence up front could be an interesting story arc to watch, if the hockey gods are with Hughes.
Yesterday, Team Canada booked its place in today’s gold medal game against Finland with a 5-2 win over Czechia. In the defeat, Jan Mysak scored the Czech’s first goal and saw plenty of action, he was named his country’s best forward of the tournament and can now focus on having a good training camp with the Habs. Baring a massive surprise, he’ll spend the year with the Rocket in Laval, and we’ll get a better idea of what he can do at the pro level.
As for Joshua Roy, he found his way back on Canada’s first line yesterday and spent over 23 minutes on the ice, more than any other Canadian player. He got an insurance goal in the last frame and had 44 shifts in the game, throughout the tournament he got 7 points and was used as a jack of all trades.
In today’s final, Canada will take on Finland and Habs’ prospect Oliver Kapanen. It’s worth noting that Petteri Nurmi, another Habs’ prospect, only played 2 games in this tournament because he’s got a virus. Apparently, it’s not Covid but something along the lines of mononucleosis. Once this tournament wraps up, another member of the organization, Marie-Philip Poulin will be starring in the Women’s World Championship in Denmark starting August 25, there will be one meeting with the USA in the preliminary round on August 30th at 2:00 PM and that will certainly be a game to watch.
Alors qu’on peut qualifier l’acquisition de Kirby Dach comme un pari pour Kent Hughes puisqu’il a besoin que le jeune centre retrouve ses repères, on ne peut pas en dire autant pour l’échange de Monahan. Après tout, il n’a absolument rien coûté au DG du CH, si on veut faire une analogie, c’est comme une participation gratuite à la loterie. En retour de considérations futures, Hughes a reçu un joueur qui a eu de la difficulté à rester en santé au cours des dernières années et qui en est à la dernière année de son contrat.
Selon le DG des Flames, Brad Treiliving, la guérison de Monahan se passe bien et il devrait être prêt à jouer cette saison. Quant à Monahan, il a dit qu’il patine présentement 4 fois par semaine et se sent extrêmement bien dans son appel conférence de jeudi soir. Au mieux, ses hanches sont comme neuves, il retrouve la forme, connait une bonne saison et permet à Hughes d’aller chercher un autre choix de repêchage à la date limite des échanges. Au pire, il n’est pas à 100%, ne joue presque pas et devient un joueur autonome sans compensation à la fin de l’année. Qu’on regarde la situation de n’importe quel angle, les Canadiens ont reçu un bon choix de repêchage pour une expérience sans risque.
C’est bien connu, la prochaine saison des Canadiens en sera une remplie de défi, l’absence de Carey Price signifie une autre année de partage du filet entre Allen et Montembeault, et on a vu ce que cela a donné l’an dernier. La ligne bleue sera jeune et il y aura beaucoup d’erreurs, mais la présence de Monahan sera une histoire intéressante à suivre, si les dieux du hockey sont avec Hughes.

Quant à l’autre finlandais repêché par le CH Petteri Nurmi, son tournoi s’est terminé après 2 matchs en raison d’un virus. Apparemment, il ne s’agit pas de la Covid mais bien de quelque chose qui s’apparente à la mononucléose. Lorsque ce tournoi sera terminé, un autre membre de l’organisation, Marie-Philip Poulin, tiendra la vedette du Championnat Mondial de Hockey féminin au Danemark dès le 25 août. Il y aura une rencontre contre les États-Unis dans la ronde préliminaire le 30 août à 2 :00 PM, c’est à mettre à votre agenda !
