The Carolina Hurricanes announced today that they’ve signed forward Paul Stastny to a one-year contract, worth $1.5 million.

Stastny is 36 years old and this past season, he scored 21 goals and 45 points in 71 games. While Stastny is a center, he’s also able to play on the wing.

Bringing in Stastny is a really solid move for the Hurricanes, especially given the very team-friendly cap hit. With Max Pacioretty’s absence, along with the losses of Vincent Trocheck and Nino Niederreiter, the Hurricanes needed to add some middle-six scoring.

It’ll be interesting to see what his role will be with the Hurricanes though, given Sebastian Aho, Jordan Staal and Jesperi Kotkaniemi were likely to slot in as top-nine centers. Either Stastny or Kotkaniemi will likely be moved to the wing.

Regardless, a one-year deal carries no risk and at such a manageable cap hit, this is a big win for the Hurricanes.
