It’s already been 4 years since Marc Bergevin managed to send disgruntled captain Max Pacioretty to Las Vegas in return for Nick Suzuki, a 2nd round pick and Tomas Tatar. According to some rumors it was Cody Glass that the Canadiens’ GM was after, but then Golden Knights GM George McPhee refused and offered Suzuki instead. In hindsight, no-one on the Canadiens’ side is going to complain about that decision. Glass only has 74 NHL games to his name and was involved in a 3-team trade which sent him to Nashville, Ryan Ellis to Philadelphia and Nolan Patrick to Vegas.
When the Pacioretty deal was concluded, everyone agreed that it would take years to know who won that trade but just 4 years later, it appears that Montreal did. Max Pacioretty played 224 games in Vegas, gathering 194 regular season points in the process and 30 playoffs points in 36 contests before being given away to the Hurricanes in return for future considerations. A very nice gift for Don Waddell’s team which is a direct consequence of the Knight’s habit to trade for whichever big name hits the market and worry about the ramifications later (in this instance, Pacioretty is a casualty of the Eichel deal).
Meanwhile, Tomas Tatar took part in 198 games with the CH putting up 149 points in the regular season and 3 points in 15 playoffs games, where he did a spectacular disappearing act, much like he did in Vegas in his short time there. Nevertheless, for 3 years, the Slovak was a fixture on the Canadiens’ top line alongside Philip Danault and Brendan Gallagher, not bad for a player that was a “throw-in” in the deal. As for Nick Suzuki, he has played 209 games since arriving in Montreal and has 143 points to his name in the regular season and 23 points in 32 playoffs games. He’s also been locked-up to an 8-year contract and if rumors are to be believed, he’ll more than likely be named captain of the team in short order, perhaps even on Monday at the team’s golf tournament. What more could one have wanted from this trade?

Selon certaines rumeurs, c’est Cody Glass que le DG du CH voulait mais le le DG de Vegas à l’époque George McPhee avait refusé, préférant se départir de Nick Suzuki. Avec le recul, personne chez le Tricolore ne se plaindra de cet état de fait. Glass n’a joué que 74 matchs dans le circuit Bettman et a été impliqué dans une transaction à 3 équipes l’été dernier alors qu’il a pris le chemin de Nashville pendant que Ryan Ellis s’envolait pour Philadelphie et Nolan Patrick pour Vegas.
Quand la transaction Pacioretty a été conclue, tout le monde s’entendait pour dire qu’il faudrait des années pour savoir qui avait eu le meilleur dans ce marché, mais 4 ans plus tard, force est d’admettre que c’est Montréal qui a frappé un coup de circuit. Max Pacioretty a joué 224 matchs à Vegas, amassant 194 points en saison régulière et 30 points en 36 matchs de séries avant de se faire tout bonnement donner aux Huricanes pour des considérations futures. Un très beau cadeau pour l’équipe de Don Waddell qui découle directement de la manie de Vegas d’acquérir les plus gros joueurs disponibles sur le marché et de se soucier des implications plus tard (Pacioretty représente le dommage collatéral de l’échange de Jack Eichel).
Pendant ce temps, Tomas Tatar a joué 198 matchs avec le Tricolore amassant 149 points en saison régulière et 3 points en séries, ou il a tout bonnement disparu comme il l’avait fait à Vegas pendant son court passage. Tout de même, pendant 3 ans, il a été un régulier sur le premier trio de la Sainte-Flanelle avec Gallagher et Danault, pas mal pour un joueur dont Vegas avait voulu se débarrasser dans la transaction. Quant à Nick Suzuki, il a joué 209 matchs avec le CH depuis son arrivé en ville et il a 143 points à sa fiche en saison régulière et 23 points et 32 matchs de séries. Il a été signé à une prolongation de contrat de 8 ans et si on en croit les rumeurs, il sera fort probablement nommé capitaine de l’équipe bientôt, peut-être même lundi lors du traditionnel tournoi de golf de l’équipe. Est-ce qu’on aurait vraiment pu en demander plus comme retour de transaction?
