“It’s Nick’s team now, I’ll keep on being a leader” those are the words Brendan Gallagher said when he was told that Suzuki would be named the franchise’s 31st captain according to GM Kent Hughes. At 23 years-old, Suzuki becomes the youngest ever captain of the Bleu, Blanc, Rouge, Saku Koivu was 24 when he was given the title.
Canadiens’ head coach Martin St-Louis explained how the choice was made by stating that it wasn’t a popularity contest, meaning that the players didn’t get to elect their new captain. St-Louis spoke to Suzuki about it at the draft, gave him his thoughts and asked him to think about whether he wanted to don the C now that Shea Weber had been traded. Kent Hughes said for his part that the management team spoke to the players at length last season, got a feel of what the leadership situation was like, they spoke to Gallagher and Weber, Martin spent the season in the room and assessed the situation and they feel confident that Suzuki is ready for the role.
It was the head coach who introduced the new captain to the press this morning at the golf tournament and eager reporters jumped right in with the questions, prompting Chantal Machabée to whisper in Suzuki’s hear that he had to introduce his alternate captains Joel Edmundson and Brendan Gallagher. This is not new territory for Gallagher, he’s been part of the leadership group for years and many saw them both a worthy captain candidate but both men were clear: Suzuki has got the support of the entire room, he’s their man, he’s ready and in turn they are ready to follow him into battle.
It was Gallagher who was the most complimentary about Suzuki, describing him like the heartbeat of the time, a calm and collected leader who steps up whenever it’s needed and who’ll be exceptional in the role. It’s hard not to feel a bit sorry for Gallagher, the fan in me wanted him to wear the C, when Max Pacioretty was traded, I thought his time had come but Bergevin chose Weber and just like that, Gally’s window to wear the C was shut. He’s still a leader on this team but he’s now got a big contract for services rendered rather than for what he can still bring to the table and that’s not the situation a new captain should be in. I spoke to many former Habs in the last few months, and they all agreed, the chance to make Gallagher the captain had been missed.
I thought it was quite interesting to hear Kent Hughes say that there will be a lot of young players coming and going between Laval and Montreal this season and that they wanted some stability in leadership. From that standpoint, it makes perfect sense to give the C to Suzuki who’s starting his 8-year contract and to give the As to Brendan Gallagher whose contract runs for 5 more years and Joel Edmundson who still has 2 years left on his deal.
What that does say as well though, is that Paul Byron might not be there for much longer, one way or another and that’s fine. Like it or not, Byron has become expendable and is a likely candidate for waivers this season if Hughes cannot manage to move his contract. Some panelists on RDS said that it wouldn’t have hurt to let him keep his A, but to frank, I’m glad it was removed. I like Byron, he’s a nice guy, but it was time to do away with that leadership by committee approach, one captain, two alternates as it should be.
As for the upcoming season, Martin St-Louis said that he has no major concern heading into training camp, he says he’s ready to work and wants to get his team ready to begin the season. In other words, he’s not concerned by the youth of his blue line, and he shouldn’t be. This year is first and foremost about building for the future and developing the youngsters and that comes with growing pains. Meanwhile, new alternate captain Joel Edmundson said that the rebuilt was last year, that he wants this team to take the next step, but that’s what he has to say. No-one comes to an event like that to say: we’ve got no chance to make the playoffs.

Le pilote du CH Martin St-Louis a expliqué la nomination en disant qu’il ne s’agit pas d’un concours de popularité, ce qui veut dire que les joueurs n’ont pas voté pour choisir leur nouveau capitaine. St-Louis a parlé à Suzuki au repêchage, lui a exposé sa façon de voir les choses et lui a demandé s’il voulait porter le C maintenant que Shea Weber avait été échangé. Kent Hughes a dit pour sa part que l’état-major avait parlé aux joueurs l’an passé, qu’ils avaient pris le pouls de l’équipe, ils ont parlé à Gallagher et Weber, que Martin avait passé la saison dans le vestiaire et observé la situation et ils sont confiants qu’il est prêt à assumer le rôle.
C’est l’entraîneur-chef qui a présenté le nouveau capitaine aux médias ce matin au tournoi de golf et les journalistes se sont empressés de le bombarder de question, poussant Chantal Machabée à chuchoter à l’oreille de Suzuki qu’il devait présenter ses assistants capitaine Joel Edmundson et Brendan Gallagher. Ce dernier se retrouve en terrain connu, il fait partie du groupe de leader depuis des années et plusieurs voyaient ces deux hommes comme des candidats au poste de capitaine, mais les deux vétérans ont été clairs : Suzuki a le support de tout le vestiaire, c’est leur homme, il est prêt pour le rôle tout comme ils sont prêts à le suivre à la guerre.
C’est Gallagher qui a été le plus élogieux envers Suzuki, le décrivant comme le cœur de l’équipe, un leader calme et confiant qui sait se lever quand il le faut et ajoutant qu’il sera exceptionnel dans son rôle. C’est difficile de ne pas être un peu déçue pour Gallagher, la fan en moi aurait aimé le voir porter le C, quand Max Pacioretty a été échangé, je croyais que son tour était venu, mais non, Bergevin a choisi Weber et c’est ainsi que sa fenêtre d’opportunité pour avoir le C s’est fermée. Il est toujours un des meneurs de l’équipe, mais il a maintenant un gros contrat obtenu sur la base des services déjà rendus plutôt que pour ce qu’il apporte toujours à la table et ce n’est pas la situation dans laquelle un nouveau capitaine devrait se trouver. J’ai parlé avec plusieurs anciens dans les derniers mois, et ils étaient tous d'accord, la chance de le nommer capitaine avait été raté.
J’ai trouvé très intéressant d’entendre Hughes dire qu’il y aura beaucoup de va et vient de jeunes joueurs entre Laval et Montréal cette saison et qu’il voulait de la stabilité dans le groupe de leadership. De ce point de vue, ça fait beaucoup de sens de remettre le C à Suzuki qui commence la première année d’un contrat de 8 ans et de donner les As à Brendan Gallagher qui est encore sous contrat pour 5 ans et Joel Edmundson qui a encore 2 ans à faire.
Ce que cela dit aussi, c’est que Paul Byron ne sera pas là pour longtemps, d’une façon ou d’une autre. Qu’on aime ça ou pas, Byron est devenu surplus et il sera un candidat pour le ballotage si Hughes n’arrive pas à l’échanger. Certains des panélistes sur RDS se disaient tristes de le voir perdre son A et que ça n’aurait pas fait de mal de lui laisser, mais honnêtement, je suis contente qu’on l’ait enlevé. J’aime Byron, c’est un bon gars, mais c’était le temps d’en finir avec l’approche de leadership par comité, un capitaine, deux assistants, c’est comme ça que ça doit être.
Quant à la saison à venir, Martin St-Louis a dit qu’il n’a pas de préoccupation majeure à l’approche du camp d’entraînement, il est prêt à se mettre au travail et veut que son équipe soit prête à jouer cette saison. En d’autres mots, sa jeune ligne bleue ne l’inquiète pas et c’est parfait comme ça. Cette année, le but sera d’abord et avant tout de bâtir pour le futur et de faire du développement, il y aura des difficultés et c’est normal. Pendant ce temps, le nouvel assistant capitaine Joel Edmundson dit que la reconstruction c’était l’an passé, qu’il faut aller de l’avant cette année, mais c’est ce qu’il doit dire, pas un joueur ne vient dans un tel évènement pour dire on n’a aucune chance de faire les séries.
