Yesterday in Brossard, the rookies had one last practice to impress before learning their fate in theory, but in practice, none of the Canadiens’ management group was there watching the youngsters, meaning that the decisions (if any) had already been made. Therefore, it wasn’t overly surprising at 5:00 PM when the team released its training camp roster to see that everyone had been extended an invitation to it.

According to the roster, only 3 players are currently injured: Carey Price, Paul Byron and Logan Mailloux. Speaking of Price, Kent Hughes has said in an interview that in can stay around the team as much as he wants, even though that’s sometimes hard for players when they can’t play. He added that Price is currently thinking about that, his involvement around the team this season is completely up to him. Both Sean Monahan and Jonathan Drouin are apparently considered healthy. Will they be healthy enough to start their season on October 12? Time will tell.

While some people complained that 74 players (44 forwards, 21 defensemen and nine goaltenders) was just too many and that it would hurt cohesion in the long run, in an interview with Jean-Charles Lajoie, Martin St-Louis explained: “We invited everyone to training camp, you want to give as many players as possible that opportunity. Because of that experience, being alongside pro players, one guy might compare himself and think well the gap isn’t that big, I can make it, I can do this.” Considering St-Louis’ own career path, it’s easy to understand where he’s coming from.

After today’s testing, the coach said that there would be scrimmages on both Thursday and Friday and the traditional red vs white game at the Bell Centre on Sunday which would allow the coaching staff to decide who would see some action in the exhibition games which start on the 26th with a duel with the Devils. Of course, the minimum number of vets required per game will be respected and for the last 2 games, the bench boss wants to have as complete a line-up as possible in order to be fully prepared for the team’s season opener on October 12 in Montreal against the Leafs.

I was in Brossard yesterday and it was interesting to see the practice ran by skills coach Adam Nicholas, there was a lot of high intensity drills and a lot of speed for about an hour. The youngsters only hit the ice around 1:00 PM, since the veterans were on the ice in the morning. While their training camp hasn’t officially started, most of the players have been back in town for a while and Brossard has seen a lot of activity in the last couple of weeks.

Even though, this was just an informal practice, I couldn’t help by notice that Kirby Dach and Cole Caufield were taking reps together while Nick Suzuki and Jonathan Drouin were doing the same. Apparently, it has been the case for some time as well. I know a lot of people have their heart set on a Suzuki-Caufield duo being completed by Slafkovsky, I must admit that Suzuki and Drouin were really clicking out there. It’s also worth mentioning that Drouin was unleashing wrist shots like there was no tomorrow without a care in the world, unlike when I saw him play 3 on 3 earlier this summer, which was a welcome sight.

More importantly though, everyone on the ice looked like they were happy to be back and having an absolute blast. This kind of atmosphere will be of primordial importance in a season that promises to be challenging and full of growing pains. With a young blueline that’s bound to make more than its fair share or errors, a positive atmosphere can make a world of difference.
