As coach Martin St-Louis had said yesterday, he wanted to mix up his groups during this training camp and it was therefore no surprise to see that the teams on display this morning were a mix of NHLers, AHLers and aspiring professional players. On team A, the big names were Caufield, Hoffman, Matheson and Barron with Primeau in net while team B was made up of Dach, Pitlick and Savard with Allen in net. As for the notable rookies on each side, team A included Filip Mesar who was centering the top line completed by Caufield and Hoffman and Justin Barron was paired up with Mike Matheson on the blue line. On team B, Emil Heineman was on the top line alongside Dach and Pitlick while Kaiden Guhle was on the top pairing with David Savard.

With so many players at camp, we cannot jump to conclusions as to what the line-up will look like come October 12, but these scrimmages are a good opportunity to evaluate the hopefuls and see what they bring to the table. Unsurprisingly, Martin St-Louis was a keen observer this morning. Through 2 periods of play, neither team had managed to score a single goal as goaltenders were solid in both periods (the starters made way for Coulombe and Desrosiers in the second half of the game). In the end, Pitlick and Dach scored in the shootout to give team red the win.

As for who stood out in this first scrimmage, I liked the way Kaiden Guhle was joining the rush and providing options in a supporting offensive role. There’s no denying that even though he is still young, he knows what he’s doing. I also thought it was interesting to see Filip Mesar get a shot as first line center. While he was drafted as a right winger, which is the position he played for the last couple of years, he used to be a center and it shows, he doesn’t look out of place at all in that role and his versatility could be rather helpful to the Habs down the line.

Emil Heineman, playing on the reds’ top line with Dach and Pitlick once again put himself in evidence launching some good shots. As for Norlinder, he took a lot of shifts alongside David Savard and looked much better than he did in the prospects challenge. Justin Barron did well but wasn’t very incisive, he looks like a guy who’s playing it safe. Caufield already looks like he’s in season shape and ready to build on his good finish to last season.

Tune in to RDS’ webdiffusion at 13:00 to see the second scrimmage of the day.
