Every year, the Canadiens start their preseason with a Red vs White game at the Bell Centre in which every seat in the house only costs $10 and comes with a free snack and drink. It’s always a big family day and it’s nice to see so many kids in the lower bowl soaking in the atmosphere and the action from up close. Even though today’s line-up was far from stellar, with so many regulars MIA and even Slafkovsky not dressed, the crowd had a blast.
In what was a one-sided affair, team Red triumphed over team White by a score of 7-2. Once again, Filip Mesar put in an impressive performance, Anthony Richard got a couple of goals, and Arber Xhekaj was solid on the blue line.

For once though, I kind of allowed myself to watch proceedings more like a fan than a writer and I did so for a pretty good reason, today, we took my girlfriend’s son to his first game. This week, we had prepared a sign asking Suzuki for a stick and then one for Caufield after it was announced that Suzuki was injured, he happily posed with it yesterday, only to find out that Caufield wouldn’t be there either.

To be honest, I had prepared the sign because when my dad took me to my first game at le Colisée, Petr Stastny gave me a puck and I became a hockey fan for life, so I thought I’d try to get him something as well, so that his introduction to hockey was as good as mine. Even though the targeted player wasn’t there, lady luck was on our side and a soft shot high up in the netting during warm-up led a puck straight down on him. A frozen puck is hard, so some tears were shed, but afterwards, he was as happy as can be.

I’ve always loved introducing kids to the game with front row seats behind the net, that position allows you both to follow the play easily but also to realize how fast and hard the pucks are coming to the goalie when they land on the boards and how much of a full-contact sport hockey is when two huge guys collide right in front of you. Even though there were several big names missing today, the kid had a blast in his hockey baptism of fire and that’s all that matters really.
