The Canadiens announced a first (mini) wave of cuts this morning with Cedrick Guindon, Antoine Coulombe, Jared Davidson and Daniil Sobolev being the first casualties. This means that there are still 70 players at camp and given the fact that there are 4 games scheduled this week including a back-to-back, it’s good to have options. There was also a medical update first thing this morning, Nick Suzuki should be back in one week while Joel Edmundson’s condition is improving but he’s still out indefinitely.
If the line-up was underwhelming yesterday in the Red vs White scrimmage it is far from being the case today. While there aren’t a lot of veterans playing, a lot of the organization’s most promising prospect will be dressed and looking to make a good first impression tonight. Both Canadiens’ first round picks from the last draft will be getting their baptism of fire with Slafkovsky being inserted on the second line alongside Rem Pitlick and Kirby Dach who’ll be sporting the Sainte-Flanelle officially for the first time and Filip Mesar centering Harvey-Pinard and Richard. This is an interesting choice for Mesar, in the middle of two guys earmarked for the AHL, clearly management is still debating where the 26th overall pick should play this year.
Owen Beck who’s arguably been the best player at camp with be centering Cole Caufield and Mike Hoffman, perhaps this means that the youngster is keeping the captain’s place warm and Hoffman is doing the same for injured Josh Anderson. At such a young age and with the log jam up front both in Montreal and Laval, there is no question that Beck will be heading back to the OHL but he is making quite the impression.
On the backhand, Justin Barron, who’s perhaps been the less visible of the candidates to make the team on the blue line will get first pairing minutes alongside newcomer Mike Matheson. Meanwhile, Kaiden Guhle, which some are already calling the next Shea Weber, will be patrolling on the second-paid with Jordan Harris.
The anticipated Slovak reunion between Slafkovsky, Mesar and second overall pick Simon Nemec will have to wait though since the Devils have elected not to use him tonight. Amongst the big names for Jersey tonight will be Hischier, Tatar, Bratt, Severson and Blackwood. Nolan Foote, the son of former Colorado blueliner Adam Foote, will get a first chance to impress and hopes to make the team this year after putting up 32 points in 55 games in Utica last season. On the blue line, Kevin Bahl will be one of the youngsters to watch. The 21-year-old was acquired in the trade that sent Taylor Hall to the Coyotes back in 2019.
The puck will drop shortly after 7:00 PM tonight and the game will be broadcasted on both RDS and TSN 2, get ready to get back into the swing of things Habs fans!

Cela signifie qu’il y a encore 70 joueurs au camp et considérant qu’il y a 4 matchs au calendrier cette semaine, incluant 2 matchs en 2 jours, c’est une bonne chose d’avoir des options. Une mise à jour médicale à également été faite ce matin, Suzuki devrait être de retour dans une semaine pendant que Joel Edmundson progresse mais que sa date de retour demeure indéterminée.
Si l’alignement du match Rouge contre Blanc laissait à désirer ce ne sera pas le cas pour le match de ce soir. Bien qu’il n’y ait pas une abondance de vétérans en uniforme, plusieurs des meilleurs jeunes espoirs de l’organisation seront de la partie et tenteront de faire une bonne impression. Les deux choix de première ronde du Tricolore lors du dernier repêchage seront en uniforme alors que Slafkovsky se retrouvera sur la 2e ligne avec Rem Pitlick et Kirby Dach qui portera officiellement la Sainte-Flanelle pour la première fois et Filip Mesar se retrouvant au centre d’Harvey-Pinard et Richard. C’est là un choix intéressant pour Mesar, entre deux joueurs qui devraient se retrouver à Laval à moins d’une grosse surprise, clairement, l’état-major se demande toujours ou il devrait évoluer cette année, en OHL ou en AHL.
Owen Beck qui pourrait être vu comme celui qui a connu le meilleur camp, se retrouvera au centre de premier trio avec Caufield et Hoffman, cela signifie peut-être qu’il garde la place du capitaine bien au chaud le temps qu’il soit de nouveau prêt à jouer et qu’Hoffman fait de même pour Josh Anderson. À un si jeune âge et une telle congestion à l’avant tant à Montréal qu’à Laval, il semble déjà acquis que Beck retournera dans la OHL, mais il aura fait toute une impression.
Derrière, Justin Barron, qui a probablement été le candidat le moins visible pour un poste à la ligne bleue aura beaucoup de minutes sur la première paire avec le nouveau membre de l’équipe Mike Matheson. Pendant ce temps, Kaiden Guhle, que d’aucun appelle déjà le prochain Shea Weber, se retrouvera sur la deuxième paire avec Jordan Harris.
La bataille au sommet des Slovaques entre Slafkovsky, Mesar et le 2e choix au total Simon Nemec devra attendre puisque les Devils ont décidé de ne pas l’utiliser ce soir. On retrouve quelques gros noms dans l’alignement du New Jersey ce soir: Hischer, Tatar, Bratt, Severson et Blackwood.
