Game 1: Flyers vs. Devils

The Philadelphia Flyers will take on the New Jersey Devils at the Wells Fargo Center on Thursday night in the 2022-23 regular season opener for both teams. Game time is 7:00 p.m. EDT. The game will be streamed on ESPN+ and Hulu. The radio feed with Tim Saunders and Steve Coates will be on 97.5 The Fanatic with an online simulcast on Flyers Radio 24/7.

For an in-depth preview of the opener, see Five Things on PhiladelphiaFlyers.com.

For the Flyers, neither of Cam Atkinson (upper body) nor Rasmus Ristolainen (undisclosed) are available to play in the opener. Both have injuries that the team is calling day-to-day. Ristolainen missed a portion of training camp but had returned to practice. Unfortunately, during Wednesday's practice, he left the ice early after apparently tweaking whatever had previously sidelined him. Atkinson did play in any preseason games and was a limited participant at practice on Thursday.

Sean Couturier (back injury) skated again on his own on Wednesday. He's now had four or five skating sessions but there is no timetable for him to be cleared for practice or to play. He's on IR to start the season. Also unavailable at the start of the season are Patrick Brown (off-season back surgery), goaltender Felix Sandström (groin strain). Defenseman Ryan Ellis is on LTIR and could miss the whole season.

For New Jersey, Nico Hischier was played on IR in the opening roster after missing time in the preseason. However, he has practiced in full for each of the last two days and said after practice that his availability for Thursday was still up in the air.

Flyers projected lineup:

21 Scott Laughton - 13 Kevin Hayes - 11 Travis Konecny
86 Joel Farabee - 49 Noah Cates - 74 Owen Tippett
25 James van Riemsdyk - 48 Morgan Frost - 57 Wade Allison
44 Nicolas Deslauriers - 58 Tanner Laczynski - 42 Hayden Hodgson

9 Ivan Provorov - 77 Tony DeAngelo
6 Travis Sanheim - 61 Justin Braun
24 Nick Seeler - 54 Egor Zamula

79 Carter Hart
[33 Samuel Ersson]

Devils head coach Lindy Ruff, as per his career-long custom, refused to publicly reveal his starting goaltender a day ahead of the game. Per Amanda Stein, the Devils' practice line combinations on Wednesday featured some juggling of blueline personnel over the course of the session. The primary combinations are embedded below, keeping in mind that Hischier may or may not be cleared to play in the opener.
