The Anaheim Ducks came up short against the Boston Bruins last night, falling 2-1 in a shootout
It looked like the Bruins opened the scoring about midway through the first period off a goal from Jake DeBrusk, but it was called back for offside afterwards. As a result, despite being outshot 13-5 in the first period, the Ducks escaped with the game still scoreless.
The Bruins did end up opening the scoring in the second period though, after John Gibson swatted at a puck but couldn’t get it to safety and Taylor Hall knocked it down and put it right back past Gibson. Under four minutes later though the Ducks were able to respond on an odd-man rush, with Frank Vatrano taking a pass from Mason McTavish and beating Linus Ullmark to tie the game. After a more even frame where each team managed 10 shots, game remained tied after 40 minutes.
In the third period, each team had power play chances and the Ducks ended up outshooting Boston 11-9. However, neither team was able to capitalize and as a result, the game continued to overtime.
In the extra frame, there were some back-and-forth rush chances exchanged. The Ducks could’ve had a great chance at a 3-on-0, but neither John Klingberg or Troy Terry joined the rush, leaving Ryan Strome to go in alone and he was stopped, with no passing option available. Back the other way, Gibson had to make a desperation save in the final 10 seconds on a penalty kill to keep the Ducks alive, sending it to a shootout.
In the shootout though, after each of the first six shooters missed, Taylor Hall slid the puck through Gibson to put the Bruins ahead. The pressure was on Max Comtois to keep it alive but he couldn’t beat Ullmark, leaving the Bruins with the extra point.
It was one of the Ducks’ better games of the year, only being outshot 36-31 overall. Especially playing a good team on the road, it was definitely more promising than past losses.
That said, if Anaheim were to begin getting back on track in terms of putting themselves in a position to be in the playoff race later on, losing out on extra points now isn’t going to help them. It also marks the team’s fourth straight loss.
It was also positive for Gibson to put a solid game together, however, stopping 35 of 36 shots. Coming off of being pulled in back-to-back games, it’s a good sign for the netminder.
Anaheim’s next game will come on Sunday, as they wrap up their road trip against the Detroit Red Wings.
