It was a challenging night at the office for Joel Edmundson last night, paired with Jordan Harris, the veteran was guilty of 6 giveaways with some leading to high danger chances and even a goal for Vegas. To be fair, you can’t expect a guy who has played only 25 games in the last 2 years to come back and be on his A-game right away. People are already saying that there is no chemistry to his pairing with Harris, but it was their first night together, time to take a breathing and give them some time.
I would have liked Samuel Montembeault to get the start last night because of his very good outing in Winnipeg on Thursday, but Jake Allen had heck of a night, so many spectacular saves, and even though he gave 6 goals on 42 shots, it could have been a slaughter without him. Most of the 2nd period could have been called the Jake Allen show as the Knights attacked relentlessly why the Habs barely even got of their zone.
Once again, it was the first line that drove the play offensively for the Canadiens and I’ve got to admit that this Dach experiment is looking better and better. Initially, I didn’t much like Dach’s game, to me he didn’t look involved enough and lacked intensity, but I’ve learnt to appreciate his game. He’s not a gritty guy who’s going to bulldoze his way through in the corners, but he will razzle and dazzle with stick play to hang on to the puck and then magically find his linemates and set them up beautifully. This combination gives the Canadiens a legitimate first line, but it doesn’t solve the other issues up front.
Right now, the Sainte-Flanelle has got all its eggs in the same basket and while it allows them to win some games, it’s not maximizing the value of their other assets. Kent Hughes has been clear, he would like to get another 1st round pick in the upcoming draft, but he’s not going to get that with veterans like Mike Hoffman, Evgeni Dadonov or Jonathan Drouin.
Sean Monahan, who’s on an expiring contract and is looking good out there could potentially fetch that kind of return, but you must give him good wingers to help him shine. I was watching him last night, and he’s so good at forechecking, dispossessing opponents and hanging on to the puck until he gets reinforcements, but when the reinforcements are Drouin and Hoffman, it will rarely turn into a goal unfortunately. Until he’s got better linemates, his stock won’t rise on the market and the Canadiens cannot afford to let it deplete.
In the 3rd period of last night’s game, Josh Anderson hit Alex Pietrangelo from behind and got himself a game misconduct. I’m not sure what went through Andy’s head there but that was a careless hit, and he might see some supplemental discipline for it. I’m almost wondering if he’s not playing a bit frustrated right now, he’s not having a great season and he’s got some consistency issues, but when you look at the power play success rate, the fact that the first unit is all forwards and that Mike Hoffman gets in and out of the line-up and gets PP time while he doesn’t, those things might be playing on his mind.
With Dadonov set to come off IR, Anderson getting some supplementary discipline might turn out to be a bit of a lifeline for Kent Hughes, but sooner rather than later, the GM have to decide what to do to respect the roster limit. As I’ve said before, I hope he bites the bullet and waives one of Dadonov or Hoffman. Could Dadonov want to have his contract terminated to head to the KHL? Maybe, but why would he turn his back on that money?
The Canadiens will be back in action on Tuesday night in Detroit before coming back to Montreal to take on the Canucks on Wednesday night, a mid-week back-to-back on tap which means that both Montembeault and Allen should get to play this week. Ce fut une soirée compliquée au bureau pour Joel Edmunson hier soir, le vétéran s’est rendu coupable de 6 revirements et certains ont donné des occasions en or aux Golden Knights et même un but. Pour être honnête, personne ne devrait s’attendre à ce qu’un joueur qui a joué 25 matchs au total lors des 2 dernières saisons soit instantanément au sommet de sa forme. Certains clament déjà qu’il n’y a aucune chimie entre lui et Harris, mais c’était leur premier match ensemble, il faudrait prendre le temps de respirer et donner la chance au coureur.
J’aurais bien aimé voir Samuel Montembeault devant le filet hier soir vu sa solide performance à Winnipeg jeudi soir, mais Jake Allen a connu toute une soirée avec une multitude d’arrêts spectaculaire. Même s’il a accordé 6 buts sur 42 tirs, sans lui ça aurait pu tourner au massacre. La 2e période a d’ailleurs été le “Jake Allen Show” alors que les Knights attaquaient sans cesse et que la Sainte-Flanelle arrivait à peine à sortir de sa zone.
Encore une fois, offensivement, c’est le premier trio qui a pris les choses en mains et je me dois d’admettre que l’expérience Dach se révèle concluante. À l’origine, je n’appréciais pas vraiment le jeu du numéro 77, je trouvais qu’il n’était pas assez impliqué et qu’il manquait d’intensité, mais j’ai appris à apprécier son jeu. Ce n’est pas le type qui va foncer dans le coin avec le couteau entre les dents et se battre becs et ongles pour la rondelle, mais il sait impressionner avec son maniement de bâton, garder la rondelle et la refiler de belle façon à ses compagnons de trio. Cette combinaison donne au CH un vrai premier trio, mais cela n’arrange pas les autres problèmes à l’avant.
Présentement, la Sainte-Flanelle a mis tous ses œufs dans le même panier et bien que cela leur permette de remporter des matchs, cela ne fait rien pour maximiser la valeur de leurs autres éléments. Kent Hughes a clairement dit qu’il aimerait aller chercher un autre choix de premier tour au prochain repêchage, mais il n’obtiendra pas ce genre de retour avec des vétérans qui ne produisent pas comme Mike Hoffman, Jonathan Drouin et Evgeni Dadonov.
Sean Monahan, dont le contrat vient à échéance cette saison, pourrait potentiellement rapporter ce genre de retour, mais pour ce faire, il faut lui donner de bons ailiers productifs pour qu’il puisse briller. Je le regardais hier soir et il était une vraie peste en échec avant, il troublait les défenseurs adverses, leur soutirait la rondelle et la protégeait en attendant les renforts, mais avec des renforts comme Drouin et Hoffman, tous ses efforts ont été en vain. Tant qu’il n’aura pas de meilleurs compagnons de trio, sa valeur sur le marché ne montera pas et le CH ne peut se permettre de la laissé déprécier, il a déjà assez de bois mort.
Hier pendant la 3e période, Josh Anderson a frappé Alex Pietrangelo par derrière et s’est mérité une inconduite. Je ne sais pas ce qui est passé par la tête d’Andy, mais c’était un coup imprudent et dangereux et je ne serai pas surprise de le voir se mériter une suspension. Je me demande s’il ne joue pas un peu frustré présentement, il ne connait pas une bonne saison, il a des problèmes de constance, mais quand on regarde le taux de succès de l’avantage numérique, le fait que la première vague est composé uniquement d’attaquant et que Mike Hoffman qui entre et sort de l’alignement en fait partir pendant que lui ronge son frein, c’est possible que ça le turlupine.
Avec Dadonov qui ne sera bientôt plus sur la liste des blessés, une suspension pour Anderson pourrait peut-être acheter du temps à Kent Hughes, mais plus tôt que tard, le DG devra prendre une décision. Comme je l’ai déjà dit, j’espère qu’il est prêt à mettre au ballotage un joueur comme Dadonov ou Hoffman. Est-ce possible que le tournoi de Dadonov soit résilié et qu’il parte jouer en KHL? Peut-être, mais pourquoi diable est-ce qu’il voudrait tourner le dos à l’argent qui lui est dû?
Les Canadiens seront de retour en action mardi soir à Détroit avant de revenir à Montréal pour affronter les Canucks, deux matchs en deux jours en milieu de semaine, on devrait donc voir les deux gardiens à l’œuvre. Après deux dimanches extrêmement bien remplis, je suis de retour sur le Habs Brunch cette semaine, vous pouvez regarder l’épisode d’aujourd’hui
