The Habs came to play last night and came out strong in the first, they dominated most of the opening frame and led 10-5 shots wise at the buzzer. Unfortunately, they were unable to convert any of their scoring chances and as is often the case when one team dominated but can’t score, the Sens came out swinging in the second.
Within 8 minutes, the Sens had taken a 3-goal lead thanks to a barrage of shots but also to 3 successive penalties to the Canadiens, Kirby Dach spent 6 minutes in the sin bin during the 2nd, although his penalty for interference on Tkachuk was questionable, a player needs to remain level-headed when that happens, not to take another 2 minutes for throwing their toys out of the pram.
Dach made amends in the final frame though, opening the score after Jake Evans retrieved a puck and fed it to him, but the Habs were unable to stage a full comeback. Christian Dvorak did make it interesting with a goal at the thirteenth minute mark, but it was unfortunately all Montreal could muster and they lost 3-2. The Sens are now just two points back of the Canadiens in the standings even though they had an horrendous start to the season.
Martin St-Louis was fuming after the game and even gave an excellent John Tortorella impression by being somewhat hostile to the media. Clearly, the coach thought his team deserved a better fate on the night. While it’s true that the referees were far from perfect, at the end of the day, his team did have its chances but failed to convert them.
Jonathan Drouin made his return last night and put in an honest performance centering the 4th line while Rem Pitlick was a healthy scratch. St-Louis described his effort as “a really good game from Joe”. Meanwhile, the coach keeps doing everything humanly possible to help Joel Armia score, the forward is used on the power play but still cannot find the back of the net. For the second game in a row he squandered a few opportunities and things went from back to worst when he even high sticked his own teammate, Joel Edmundson.
The Habs will need to bounce back swiftly as they will be back in action tonight in Montreal against the Duck. As the Bell Center is celebrating Christmas, the first 10 000 fans to come through the doors will receive a free Christmas decoration, hopefully, the Canadiens aren’t as generous with Anaheim who’s only got 7 wins to its name so far this season.
