Patrick Kane Injury Update and Interesting Possibilities

With no games until Thursday, there hasn’t been too much to discuss regarding the Hawks as a team. However, there has been some growing concern and interesting takes regrading Patrick Kane and his injury. As it was left on Friday, Kane discussed that he could probably play but was dealing with some discomfort. This turned into him missing Sunday’s game against the Flames to him not practicing with the team on Tuesday and Wednesday. He did skate before the team however left the ice and was seen watching practice from the bench Wednesday.

There was an interesting comment from Elliotte Friedman on his 32 thoughts podcast that the Hawks could shut down Kane for the season, extended him for one year and just repeat another year of will or won’t they trade him.

Kane sat down with NBC Sports Chicago on Tuesday where he talked about his status and addressed the rumor he might be shut down for the year. "The last two games, I think I probably could've played, it's just we knew we had these three days in between, so it's just better to be cautious with it and had some treatment coming in, so just trying to be smart with it right now. But hopefully I'll be back soon."

What initially seemed like a minor injury seems to really be gaining traction into more serious territory and if that is the case, I am glad he is taking this approach to the recovery. Given the situation of this team there is no need for him to rush back into the line up and risk a greater injury.

What is going to make this interesting is how this will affect any potential trade offers. Will teams be a little hesitant to make a move on him that there is an injury concern? If they do make an offer is it going to be a lower value offer than what is anticipated for him? Finally, depending how long it takes to get back in the line up, will interested teams make other moves to fill their needs leaving the Hawks with no real offers?

Looking at what could be from a no trade. At the beginning of the year I landed in the territory of if they do not trade Kane, it will be the first big failure of the KD era. However, hearing the idea of Kane almost resigning for a year by default has me rethinking that stance. If the Hawks land Bedard or Fantilli, having them spend at least part of the year playing with and learning from Kane would be amazing. There is no one better to learn from than 88. Lets be honest after his play over the last two games a line of Reichel, Kane, and Bedard gives you a little bit of a mouth watering sensation. However unlikely that is to happen hey it’s fun to dream..

There is a lot of speculation right now and all of us armchair gms can try and give our best prediction but at the end of the day until it comes from Kane or KD mouth, we won’t really know what is actually happening. This is of course a developing story, and I will update once there is more to discuss.
