Game Summary:

Before getting into the game, congrats to Lucas Raymond for being named 2nd star of the week. On to the bummer.

Detroit has let in at least 4 goals in 6 of their past 7. Put that together with last year’s cup champs who are now in desperation type mode to get back to the post season and you get what happened today. There’s really not much to dive into.

The Avs had 6 goals on 27 shots with more than 5 minutes left in the game. Darn close to 1 of 4 shots going in the net. It’s just that bad today. I see people ripping into Yzerman and I’m just shaking my head a bit. Most of the roster has been turned over. We have kids making the team at 19 and 20 more. Brand new coach and on and on.

My biggest head shake is, “we should be tanking”. We’ve finished dead last and picked 4th. We’ve been pushed back 3 spots multiple times. The lottery is not good to Detroit when they’re the worst team in the league. It’s rarely good to the team at all.

There have been some awful, awful games to watch. I didn’t see this team making enough noise to get to the post season. We never got to see the team we thought we had with injuries, etc. Even if we had, anyone thinking of a “sneak into the playoffs” is still a bit premature. You’re changing from a culture of vets not trying to “move your feet or lose your seat”.

This was awful to watch. Columbus was awful to watch. Toronto was a better game after a horrible game that this team somehow won. For the pleasant surprises, there have been some really unpleasant issues. Copp has had a rough time living up to expectations. Our “best” goalie is letting in 4 goals a game an awful lot right now. Whether it’s mental prep or just playing much better teams on many nights, this is quickly becoming a forgettable season in many ways.

The last full tear down was almost 40 years ago. The team consistently hit the playoffs starting with Lidstrom around 32 years ago. Then, after some good runs, they waited 8 or so years too long to tear it down. The road is still going to be bumpy. I do think that Yzerman can build a winner (and that he’s proved the point). He’s going to make questionable moves, even bad moves. Every GM does. This game just made everything feel even worse right now.

First Period Detroit goals:
No First Period Detroit goals

At 5:12 the Avs scored, Detroit challenged and lost so Avs were put on power play. 1-0 COL. Wings survived the 2 minutes.

At 18:04 the Avs scored on their 3rd power play. 2-0 COL

Shots on goal: 10-8 COL
Score: 2-0 COL

Second Period Detroit goals:

At 3:05 Avs score again. 3-0

At 10:06 Avs score power play goal. Another 4-0 deficit

After a failed power play, Avs score again around 16:00 5-0

At 19:00 Wings finally get on the board as Perron did a nice bounce pass to Copp behind the COL net. Copp skated out, turned and shot. Simple play done well. 5-1

Shots: 22-15 COL
Score: 5-1

Third Period Detroit goals:

Goalie switch as Hellberg is in for the clearly overcome Husso

Chiarot scored at 3:40 into the 3rd with assists from Hronek and Larkin. As I’m typing this, less than 2 minutes later a horrible turnover led to an Avs goal. 6-2

Final consolation goal with a nice shot from Seider at 19:26. Assists from Copp and Rasmussen. Tweet cites a tip from Perron, still being credited to Seider at this point.

Final Shots: 29-27 DET
Final Score: 6-3 COL
