For the first time since signing his entry-level contract with the Canadiens, Logan Mailloux spoke one on one with a media from Montréal and the timing of the release of this interview is quite good to say the least. On Saturday, Mailloux scored his first career OHL hat trick and the last goal was a Michigan one, a rare feat for a defenseman. It’s too early to say how Mailloux’s game will translate to the NHL, but clearly the young man is hoping to be the offensive defenseman the Canadiens crave and miss so much thanks to the development staff he’s working with.
Mailloux wants to make the team next year and Francis Bouillon said he thought he was the next Habs’ prospect who would graduate to the NHL, but before that happens, Gary Bettman and the NHL will have to give their ok so that Mailloux can be reinstated. I won’t go back to the events that have led to him being in that position, but the league did prevent the Bruins from playing Mitchell Miller after they signed him to a contract, ruling him ineligible because of his history of bullying a young man in school. Judging by what Hughes said when he signed Mailloux, it would be surprising if the league decided to go down that road though.
One last detail about Mailloux, he gave part of his one on one interview in French and sounded pretty darn good doing it. If you want to watch the interview, it’s available here:

Meanwhile, Lane Hutson, who’s perhaps the prospect I’m most excited about, is having himself quite a year with Boston University. Yesterday, he was named the Hockey East rookie of the week for the 3rd week in a row. That’s the 4th time he has received the honor, he’s also been named player of the month once and defenseman of the month twice. Right now, he’s got the best point per game ever for a defenseman in the NCAA. With 36 points in 26 games, the youngster is easily beating Cale Makar’s number in his own NCAA rookie campaign, but as well all know, there’s quite a gap between the NCAA and the NHL, still, this is no doubt a very encouraging sign.
Up front, Sean Farrell is having a very good second campaign with Harvard, he’s got 36 points to his name in 23 games and La Presse’s Guillaume Lefrançois reported today that Kent Hughes intends to sign him to an entry level contract after the end of his NCAA season. When he saw Farrell score last night against Boston College, the Canadiens’ GM said: “That was a nice pass, he brought the puck back. He’s such a smart player, it’s hard to bet against him”. Just like Hutson, Farrell is on the small side at 5’9’’, and that’s probably why he slid all the way down to the 124th selection of the 2020 entry draft. If Harvard doesn’t make the final, it’s possible that Farrell could get into some games with the Habs, just like Justin Harris did last season. The Canadiens’ brass doesn’t expect Farrell to want to go back to the NCAA for one last season after speaking to him during development camp and it does look like the 21-year-old is ready to take the next step.
If you’re starving for some Habs’ hockey, you’ll be glad to know that the team will get back to practice on Thursday at 14:00. Will we get some news till then? A health update on Monahan perhaps? A contract for Caufield or even a trade? Who knows, but keep your eyes on this space to know all the latest developments.
