For the second year running, the Habs are breaking records for games missed by injured players and they are reeling. The Canadiens have already recalled plenty of players from their AHL affiliate and every one of their lines includes AHL graduate players. On Tuesday, Joel Armia played in just three shifts before calling it a night, joining Monahan, Guhle, Slafkovsky, Gallagher, Caufield, Evans, Xhekaj and Dach on the injury list and the Canadiens announced today that Chris Wideman is now also on IR. Add to that the names of Price and Byron who are on LTIR and the Habs are nearly unrecognizable.
Taking all this into account, it’s hardly a surprise that GM Kent Hughes went fishing on the waiver wire today and caught center Chris Tierney from the Florida Panthers. The 28-year-old was chosen in the 2nd round, 55th overall by the San Jose Sharks at the 2012 NHL entry draft. Since then, he’s played 574 games in the NHL with the Sharks, the Senators and the Panthers, scoring 75 goals and registering 154 assists in the process for 229 points. He’s described as a good two-way center who can handle himself at the face-off dot. This season, he’s got a 55.1% success rate.
The Canadiens also gave an update about the health of a few players today. Apparently, Joel Armia left Tuesday’s game because he wasn’t feeling well and he’s considered day-to-day, his participation in tomorrow’s game is questionable. As for Chris Wideman, he is sidelined with an upper-body injury and is considered week-to-week. If you were wondering about Joel Edmundson’s status, today’s update will have done very little to ease your mind, the team stated that he is progressing well and that they would provide a further update at the end of the week.
The most puzzling update though was the one about Kirby Dach: “Forward Kirby Dach won’t join the team in Philadelphia. Dach was earlier diagnosed with a non-covid related illness that has sidelined him since February 16. Through the course of further medical evaluation and testing, it was determined that the illness-like symptoms were related to a lower-body injury”. Are you scratching your head at this point? You’re not alone… I suppose we can start the guessing game, I’ll go with an ingrowing toe nail that got infected, what do you think? Still no word about Arber Xhekaj’s status.
Chris Tierney will be joining the Canadiens in Philadelphia for tomorrow’s game and depending on Armia’s availability, we could see some line tweaking. We should know more at tomorrow’s morning skate.
