As the rumors kept swirling in the past month with the New Jersey Devils, Carolina Hurricanes and Vegas Golden Knights, Fitzgerald will soon get his sniper, Timo Meier.
Meier, 26, has 31 goals and 52 points so far this season. At the moment, he has been held out since February 19th with an upper body injury.
With Meier, New Jersey will arm Jack Hughes or Nico Hischier with an elite winger that has presence in front of the net. He will also help the Devils power play as well and scored 13 goals for San Jose on the man advantage.
According to Frank Seravalli’s twitter account, Sharks defenseman Scott Harrington will be part of the deal with Meier going to the Devils. Harrington, drafted by Pittsburgh Penguins in 2011, could give the Devils some depth on defense and can play a physical game.
But here is the real question: What did the Devils give up?
Dawson Mercer should be off the table.
Recently, Mercer has been linked to a report by Robert Aiken of NorthJersey.com that the San Jose Sharks are interested in him in exchange for Timo Meier. Mercer is only 21 years old and still in his second year in the NHL. So far (knock on wood) up until this point, he has been durable playing all of his NHL games in his young career. His entry level contract won’t be up until July 2024 with a cap hit a shade under $900K.
It should be interesting what this trade will cost the Devils. Will Timo Meier get an extension?
We’ll find out soon enough.
