Yesterday morning, the Canadiens announced that they had signed prospect Sean Farrell to a 3-year entry-level contract which started on the day. A 4th round pick in 2020, the 5-foot-9 and 175 pound left winger has recorded 81 points over the course of his 58 games with Harvard in the NCAA. His sophomore season has been particularly productive as he amassed 53 points in just 34 games. Thanks to the pandemic, Farrell was short-changed hockey wise and didn’t get to play as many games as he could have but he invested his time wisely and he’ll be getting his degree this Summer, meaning that there was no need for him to stick with college for another season.
The 3-year deal carries a $1,158,333 AAV and if he plays in the AHL, he’ll get $80,000 a year. Farrell will be making his NHL debut before the end of the season and the team has confirmed that he will be joining his teammates on the current road trip to Buffalo and Philadelphia. Yesterday, Martin St-Louis said he didn’t know when he’d be in the line-up, but we know it won’t be tonight according to what we’ve seen at morning skate. That’s hardly surprising as Farrell will need to get acquainted with the team’s system or concepts as St-Louis would put it. Watching a couple of games from the press gallery will surely be beneficial for the youngster and help him understand the way the Canadiens play. When he does suit-up though, the rookie will do it wearing number 57, hopefully, his career with the Tricolore is better than Benoit Pouliot’s was with the Montreal team.
There will be no changes to the line-up tonight as Chris Wideman and Rem Pitlick were both skating as extras in the morning skate and the lines will remain intact after this line-up positively destroyed Columbus on Saturday night. However, Samuel Montembeault will make way for Jake Allen in net.
In other news, Elliotte Friedman said the following on his 32 thoughts: “Jets have talked to the Canadiens on and off about Dubois, we know that Dubois is going to end up there 95%, is there someway we can make a deal so the Canadiens get him earlier and we get something we want? They’ve talked about that”. To be fair, if there is such certainty that Dubois will come to Montreal, I don’t really see the need to sacrifice assets to make it happen, but I guess if the Canadiens do, it’s probably that they consider that it would be a substantial advantage to own his rights and be able to negotiate one on one with him before free agency.
Personally, I’m not all that crazy about getting Dubois, but the likelihood is that his acquisition would speed up the rebuild. I don’t know what the Jets are after, but the cupboard is chock-block full of left-ended defensemen, perhaps that could be a start to the discussion. There are also some rumblings that the Panthers’ first round pick at the upcoming draft could be part of the equation, we’ll have to wait and see…
