The Carolina Hurricanes suffered a shutout loss against the Nashville Predators yesterday, falling 3-0.
Despite outshooting the Predators 14-8 in the opening frame, the Hurricanes found themselves down 2-0 through 20 minutes. Carolina surrendered the first goal of the game on a shorthanded rush to Mark Jankowski around eight minutes into the game, before Michael McCarron just threw the puck on net to bank it off Andersen and in only three minutes later.
The Hurricanes then outplayed Nashville in the second frame, outshooting them 12-6 and while it looked like Brady Skjei cut the lead in half late in the second period, the goal was called back and Carolina remained down by two. The Hurricanes tried to press in the third period but couldn’t get a ton going, and Dante Fabbro added an empty netter for a 3-0 Nashville win.
Once again, it’s another situation where the Hurricanes outshot their opponent and had their chances (especially in the first two periods), but couldn’t convert. The Hurricanes also couldn’t make anything happen on their power plays either, then allowed a shorthanded goal. It marks the second shutout loss for the Hurricanes in their last six games, as well as seven games in a row where the team hasn't managed more than three goals.
With the loss, the Hurricanes are only a point up on the New Jersey Devils for top spot in the Metropolitan. They do have a game in hand, but they'll need three wins over their next four games to lock down the spot for good.
While Frederik Andersen did play fine overall and had a couple big saves, he also allowed a weak goal to put Carolina down by two. I think if Antti Raanta can put together another solid start next game he plays, it’s going to be difficult to not go with Raanta over Andersen to at least start the postseason.
The Hurricanes will be back in action tomorrow afternoon, as they face the Buffalo Sabres.
