Oilers Start The Off-Season With a Massive Trade

WHOA.

I expected the Edmonton Oilers to make small moves this off-season, tweak the roster here and there and maybe try and bolster the defense. I did not expect them to come out swinging like this.

Today the Oilers traded a 2023 5th round pick...

For the rights...

To Jayden Grubbe. That's right. THE Jayden Grubbe.

If you've lived under a rock and don't know who I am speaking of, Grubbee is a right shot centre, who was drafted in the 3rd round in 2021 by the New York Rangers. This past season Grubbe had 18 goals and 67 points in 64 games with the Red Deer Rebels.

Okay maybe not as big a blockbuster as I originally let on.

This is a fine depth move by the Edmonton Oilers and I expect more roster adds like this over the summer. Grubbe is not some can't miss prospect and could likely never play a game in the NHL but at 20 years old he will at least be able to provide more depth with the Condors. Edmonton needs to continue to develop their farm system and have a mix of young draft picks, middling players who could still improve, and veterans that could compete for NHL jobs.

Expect the Oilers to make more moves like this. It isn't going to be a sexy summer of blockbuster trades, but at this stage it's the right call to make.
