Erik Karlsson is amazing. On the ice and off he is as dynamic as any since Paul Coffey,
He put up 100 points basically by himself in San Jose.
He won the Norris after showing what he could do when once again healthy…
Based on his numbers, his salary is actually reasonable, and were he a UFA he would get at least 10.
However, if you were putting one team together to play the new super team from the Martian Hockey League would he be in your top 6? Probably not.
While he is not nearly as awful defensively as some would have you believe, he is in fact limited in what he does. And yes, what he does he does better than almost anyone ever in his position, but against equally tough competition you’d have to spend too much time protecting him…
He also wants the puck. ALL THE TIME. No one else in San Jose, or even Ottawa in his best years, wanted to carry the puck up as much as he did.
He wants to play for a Cup contender…Those teams are all capped out, but what is even worse, those teams have guys who want the puck too.
So can you justify trading for such a specific kind of mastery?
