The Toronto Maple Leafs took care of some summer business on Monday, signing restricted free agent forward Nick Abruzzese to a two-year, two-way contract extension.
The deal is for the NHL league minimum $775,000 and for a yet undisclosed lesser amount at the AHL level.

The 24-year-old was a fourth-round pick of the Leafs in 2019 out of the USHL’s Chicago Steel and played two seasons with Harvard University, compiling 77 points (23 goals, 54 assists) in 59 career NCAA games, he also represented the United States at the 2022 Olympic Winter Games alongside teammate Matthew Knies in Beijing, scoring four points (one goal, three assists) in four games.

The Slate Hill, NY native has had two brief stints with the Leafs, registering three points (1 goal, 2 assists) in 11 career NHL games, and put up good numbers in his first full AHL season with the Toronto Marlies (16 goals, 32 assists in 69 games).

Abruzzese is waiver-exempt up to playing 59 NHL games, which could mean he will be going up and down from the Marlies to the Leafs and will be one of the first options for Sheldon Keefe this season. His ability to play wing and center in a pinch could be invaluable and In brief stints has shown the capability of being an effective depth forward.
