The baby Habs took part in the mandatory physical testing day yesterday and were also weighted and measured, three names stood out to me when it came to weight, those of Logan Mailloux, David Reinbacher and Emil Heineman. Mailloux added 10 pounds to his frame and now comes in at 220 pounds, Reinbacher went from 194 to 209 pounds, a gain of 15 pounds and Heineman put on eight pounds from 194 to 202 pounds.

This morning, the Laval Rocket head coach Jean-François Houle put the players through their paces on the ice and the team will now be heading to Buffalo for the prospect challenge. Before leaving the CN Sports Complex, some of the rookies spoke to the media.

Sean Farrel spoke about winning the pucks off bigger guys, saying that it was a bit different from him and he had to use his stick to do it rather than his weight like guys who are heavier. Even though he played a few games in the NHL, Farrel is fully aware that he hasn’t made it yet, the team didn’t win a single game when he was in the line-up and his goal is to become a player who’ll help the team win.
As for Owen Beck, the star of yesterday’s testing video, he’s ready to do what he did last year but this time at a higher level. He describes himself as a two-way player and he’s improved on the offensive side of the game. He comes in without putting too much pressure on himself or objectives, he just wants to stay at camp as long as possible. Having seen Joshua Roy play at the junior World Championships last year, he said that what really stands out is how smart he is on the puck and how he made his way to the top line playing an excellent tournament. If Beck goes back to the OHL this year, he’s hoping to make Team Canada for the World Juniors, but from the get-go, to get the whole experience and be one of the leaders of the team.

The team’s latest first round pick, David Reinbacher also spoke to the media explaining that his team in Switzerland had made it an objective for him to gain weight this offseason and he did it by eating the right things and eating more often. He still feels fast even with the 15 extra pounds and feels great on the ice. With his height, he needed more weight for the men’s game. He’s enjoying his first full training camp with the Habs and he’s looking forward to the Prospects Challenge in Buffalo. He wants to stick to his game, be himself and help the team win in Buffalo. When asked who caught his attention on the ice today, he praised his defense partner William Trudeau.

Logan Mailloux was also made available to the media and explained that he had been in town for over a month and that he lived with Paul Byron and his family. The young man was grateful for the experience and the chance to pick the brain of a man who has played over 600 games in the NHL and has plenty of knowledge to share. He stated that his goal coming in was to make the Canadiens and it would be wrong for him to have any other mindset. When asked who impressed him most on the ice, he said that Emil Heineman could really shoot a puck and battled very hard in the corner which has made him a favorite of his. He approached the rookie tournament knowing that every one wants to show what they can do, but that it’s much more fun to do it while winning.

With that, the table is now set for the Prospects Challenge and the Canadiens will start their tournament tomorrow night by taking on the Sabres at 7:00 PM. The games, just like the other two, will be streamed on RDS.ca.
