Box Score

Game Summary:

First, I just want to get this out of the way. No one is doing a victory lap if they look at tonight’s tilt. Chicago has lost legitimate hall of farmers, very good players (Debrincat) and tonight saw a lot of rookies and some depth players take the ice. All that said, it’s still fun to watch a win.

I was actually most intrigued by a question that Pang had asked Fabbri. He was asked who he noticed that he didn’t know much about in this preseason. Danielson and Edvinsson were his answer. I enjoy watching Sprong shoot the puck, and Compher looks like an upgrade over Copp. I don’t say that to knock anyone, I just hadn’t seen a lot of Compher. Edvinsson shows moments of both good and bad decision making. Bedard turned the big man inside out on a drive. It happens. I’m still optimistic that Edvinsson will be in Detroit fairly soon.

Reimer put in a solid night. It seemed to reinforce that Cossa can take his time in the other leagues, though I don’t know if Reimer will be in the final tandem.

Rasmussen had a good night, was nice to see Soderblom rip a beauty and get on the score sheet. Again, this was a very off balance lineup and Chicago is dealing with a full reboot. Enjoyable moments and it sounded like there were more Chicago fans than Detroit fans at some points. LCA isn’t filling up for the preseason.

It will be interesting to see who hits the ice for Detroit in the rematch on the other side of Lake Michigan. I hope you had a chance to enjoy this one. Was a fun watch and some good looks on special teams.

First Period:

Glad to see Pang on Chicago broadcast, but haven’t been able to find a Red Wings cast via ESPN+

Sprong goal

At 2:46 after a lot of good cycle time in the O zone, Sprong cashed in as he turned toward the net and went low, looked like glove side but pic is all over the place on broadcast. 1-0 DET

A lot of up and down action as the teams seem fairly evenly matched. At one point Wings were up 7-1 on shots now 7-3 with 10:39 left.

Rasmussen’s first

At 11:57 Rasmussen snapped a beauty after some good O zone work. Shots now 10—5. 2-0 DET

Just seconds later Blackhawks go to the power play. (12:13)
With 28 seconds left, Chicago takes a tripping penalty and teams will be 4 on 4 followed by a 90 second power play. Detroit gave up a 1 on 0 to Dickinson, Reimer managed to hold off the breakaway. Detroit gave up the advantage with a faceoff violation by Perron now there will be 58 seconds of 4 on 4 followed by a shortened Chicago power play. 4 on 4 ended with no scoring.

Chicago down to about 30 seconds of power play time. Detroit kills the remaining advantage with about 3 mins left in the first.

End of Period:
Score: 2-0 DET
Shots: 14-9 DET

Second Period:

Bedard nearly got his first of the preseason as he turned Edvinsson inside out. Reimer has looked strong when he’s needed to. Almost tied in shots now at 14-12 DET.

Soderblom goal

At 3:34 after some good cycling in the o zone (again) Soderblom skated into a Lombardi pass after a steal from behind the net. The big winger went to one knee to shoot and I think rang the back post off of a heavy shot. 3-0 DET.

Tuomisto goal

At 4:52 with continued sustained pressure, Tuomisto scored on Detroit’s 19th shot of the game. 4-0 DET. Chicago with 12 shots.

Rasmussen’s 2nd of the night

At 7:44 Detroit scored again as Rasmussen took a pass from Compher. He dipped to the knee similar to Soderblom for his second of the night. 5-0 Detroit. Shots are 22-13 DET.

Chicago goes to the power play near the halfway mark. Wing with 2 clears so far. 35 seconds left. Detroit kills it off. Shots now 22-16 DET. At 12:54 a scrum ensued just outside of Detroit’s zone in front of the benches. Still 5-0 Detroit. Chicago ends up on the power play. 25 seconds in Edvinsson goes off for tripping. 5 on 3 for 1:35 for the Blackhawks.

Wings have killed 1:25 of the 2 man advantage and got a much needed personnel change. Wings end up killing off the remaining one man advantage. 4:30 left in period. Lyon in net for Detroit since about the halfway mark.

Two minutes. To go, shots on goal tied at 22 apiece.
End of second period:
Score: 5-0 Detroit
Shots: 23-22 Chicago

Third Period

At 5:04 Crevier scored for Chicago as Bedard did a nice job getting to the front and moved well to cause a screen. 5-1 DET

At 5:56 Soderblom took a knee on knee hit (looked incidental) but those are apparently very painful. Edvinsson dropped the gloves to stand up for his teammate but the refs wouldn’t allow the fight. A major/game misconduct was handed to Chicago. 5 minutes of power play time with 14:04 left in the game.

Compher power play goal

20 seconds in Compher cashes in after some nice puck movement. 6-1 DET. Compher really impressing beyond Copp. Not trying to be cruel, just seeing good things so far. Power play ends with just the one goal, but some good puck movement and opportunities. Veleno had some close calls, really needs to break through this year. He has strength and speed and has shown the ability to get open and find lanes. Just not finishing.

At 17:56 Maata went to the box for high sticking. Hawks 0 for 5 so far. Shots 34-29 for Detroit as we enter the final 2 minutes. Danielson with a nice steal led to a backhand attempt by Edvinsson. No go but a good penalty kill thus far.

Wings kill it off.

Final score: 6-1 Detroit
Final Shots: 34-29 Detroit
