Wrap: Flyers Stumble in San Jose, 2-1

The Philadelphia Flyers opened a four-game road trip with a 2-1 loss against the San Joe Sharks at the SAP Center on Tuesday evening. The Sharks, who came into the game with a record of 0-11-1 and a goal differential of minus-43, earned their first win of the 2022-23 season.

This is the second straight season that San Jose's first win of the season came at the Flyers' expense. On Tuesday, the Flyers had a big shot on goal advantage, 39-23, but were held to 11 high-danger scoring chances by a San Jose team that entered the game with a minus-43 goal differential. Opposing a penalty kill that entered the game yielding roughly one opposing power play goal for every three PK opportunities, the Flyers went 0-for-5.

In a game where generating a strong start would have gone a long way toward keeping the Sharks down, the Flyers found themselves trailing 1-0 just 1:43 into the first period. As the game progressed, the Flyers applied a lot of forechecking pressure and spent a lot of time in the San Jose end of the ice. However, for all the pucks that were put at the San Jose net, only a modest number were of top quality.

The Flyers were guilty of 19 turnovers during the game: 10 via giveaways, nine via takeaways by San Jose. The Flyers were also dominated in the faceoff circle, losing 69 percent of the draws.

Anthony Duclair (3rd goal of the season) and William Eklund (PPG, 2nd) scored for the Sharks. A late second period goal by Joel Farabee (6th), which was nearly a spectacular save but landed on goalie Mackenzie Blackwood's pad inside the net, went up on the scoreboard after a video review.

Samuel Ersson stopped 17 of 19 shots in a losing cause. Blackwood denied 38 of 39 Flyers shots. For a detailed recap, analysis and more, see the Postgame 5 on PhiladelphiaFlyers.com.

After a two-game absence, Sean Couturier returned to the lineup from a lower-body injury. Despite having had four generally solid games -- not perfect by any means but solid -- on both sides of the puck, Morgan Frost returned to the scratch list.
