I guess we’re still not 100% sure if Fabbri had 2 goals, but he certainly factored in the game. For the positive, he had one goal and several blocks. To the bad, his trips to the penalty box. Still, overall a good night for the winger. (Fabbri is saying he didn’t touch the puck, thinks it will be changed). He even got a tap on the pads from Laine after blocking a shot.
The top line saw Raymond open the scoring with a tricky reverse play from behind the net, and Debrincat got his 10th of the year. Veleno and Larkin looked good in the faceoff dot while Copp and Compher made a very good duo (particularly defensively).
This was a needed win, a better start, but after going up 2-0 Detroit went down 3-2. Husso ended up letting in 4 goals. The Texier breakaway was a place where he was needed and his one on one game isn’t where it needs to be. Letting in 4 goals on 22 shots seems to reinforce that something is not clicking for the goalie Detroit has made their “top guy” for now.
It’s a hope that the trip to Sweden will reinforce the connections between the players and help develop some chemistry. The wings gave up far too many rushes where the D was a step behind a CBJ player. Whether it was a bad change or players deep in the Ozone, it needs to be corrected.
3 points out of 4 in the past 2 contests is a good way to get going again. We’ll see what back to back games in Sweden brings for the team.
Wings went with Copp/comp;her/Perron line to start. Decent energy, top line came out next. Good staking but shots not getting through.
At 3:41 Raymond made a nice face that looked like he was going around the net, did a quick reversal and tucked the puck in for the first of the game. 1-0 DET. Seconds later Fabbri missed on an open net, but made up for it at 4:36 as it tucked in a net front opportunity as Fischer fed the puck from behind the net. 2-0 DET
With 15:34 left in the first. Shots 7-0 DET.
A minute later Texier gets a breakaway and scores for CBJ. 2-1 DET (CBJs first shot of the game. Was a terrible miss by the goalie after Detroit got lazy on their change and had no coverage. Still the type of save you need that Husso doesn’t provide.
Fabbri heading to the box with 6:28 left. Shots are 8-2 Detroit. Wings kill it but shots now 8-5.
With 1:46 left CBJ ties it up on an outnumbered rush with a puck knocked out of the air by Fantilli. Shots are 8-6. Detroit’s attack had them completely out of position, and CBJ has had at least 3 rushes where the D is behind the fore checker. Whether it’s on him or not, Husso isn’t the goalie that will save you from those mistakes.
It began to feel like “more of the same” as CBJ took a 3-2 lead at 5:41. Detroit had started strong but the 3rd goal of doom found its way in as Columbus scored 3 straight. Then, it happened. A 2nd period comeback.
A fairly innocent play as Raymond got the puck from behind the net to Petry on the half wall and Petry found Debrincat near the slot. Debrincat found his 10th of the year on a rip that tied up the game at 16:01.
At 18:19 Sprong restored the lead for Detroit. 2 minutes after the tying goal, CBJ was unable to get the puck out and Kostin got the puck to Sprong who ripped a beauty. 4-3 Detroit
The period opened well. Even though the power play wasn’t clicking, a shot by Walman from back near the point took a strange bounce and ended up up CBJ’s net after Fabbri tapped it in for his 2nd of the night. 5-3 DET
With 13:01 left Fabbri blocked a Laine shot with a kick save. Got a tap on the pads from Laine as the bench did their own composite applause.
At 9:21 Detroit to the box for tripping. Shots currently 28-16 DET as Fabbri heads to the box for the 2nd time. Lots of 2s for 14 tonight.
Wings kill it, but Laine scores just seconds after the expiration giving CBJ 4 goals on just 17 shots. 5-4 DET, shots 28-17 DET. Husso is not the goalie this team needs to keep going back to.
