The Canadiens have yet to play the Rangers so far this season and their first visit to the Bell Centre will be no easy task. New York is second in the standings this morning, a single point behind the Jets and with a game in hand. Artemi Panarin is third in league scoring tied with David Pastrnak and Connor McDavid, he will be the man to stop. The Rangers have yet to lose a game in overtime this season but have lost once in the shootout.
Following Christian Dvorak injury news, the Canadiens recalled Emil Heineman yesterday and will likely go back to a 12-6 formation. In net, Martin St-Louis has confirmed that Samuel Montembault will get the start, the Becancour native has started four games against the Rangers so far and has a 3-0-1 record with a 2.88 GAA and a .910 SP.
Following Thursday’s loss to the Sabres, the Canadiens will hope to offer a better performance. The Rangers have won six of the last 10 meetings between the two sides including the last one, a 4-3 win in the shootout last March.
Yesterday, prospects Lane Hutson and Jacob Fowler won the World Junior Championships with Team USA in a 6-2 win over hosting Sweden. Throughout the tourney, Lane Hutson averaged 23:58 of ice time and racked up six assists. He was also named to the WJC Media All-Star team alongside teammate Cutter Gauthier, Sweden’s Hugo Havelid, Theo Lindstein and Jonathan Lekkerimaki and Czechia’s Jiri Kulich. As for Fowler, he featured in three games posting a 2.59 GAA and a .888 SP and was on duty when the USA won 4-3 in the shootout against Czechia in the preliminary round.
Before the Canadiens take to the ice though, Montreal’s PWHL team will be taking on Minnesota at 3:30 PM ET this afternoon. The game will be Minnesota’s home opener and will be the first PWHL game to be held in an NHL building as it’s set to take place in the Xcel Energy Center. Minnesota started its season in Boston with a 3-2 win over the locals, earning three points in the standings. As for Montreal, they won their first game in overtime against Ottawa 3-2 in overtime.
So far, no home team has won a game in PWHL history, the visitors have a 4-0 record so far and Montreal will hope to follow that trend. So far, over 10,000 tickets have been sold, meaning the league attendance record will be shattered just days after being set in Ottawa. In Canada, the game will be showed on CBC and RDS 2 on television and on CBC Gem Online as well as on the League’s Youtube channel.
