After taking part in the World Junior Championships, Owen Beck’s return to Peterborough will have been short lived as he was traded yesterday to the Memorial Cup tournament hosts, the Saginaw Spirit. This will be Beck’s third team in the OHL as he was moved to the Petes last year when they were gearing up for a long playoff run and a presence in the Memorial Cup tournament. The trade served the Petes well as Beck gathered 25 points in Peterborough’s last 30 contests last season, before notching 16 points in 22 playoffs games in the OHL. Of course, Beck is more than points and his ability to win faceoff was also key in his role with the Petes.

Yesterday, it was announced that the Saginaw Spirit had sent Aiden Young and three draft picks (2025 2nd round (OTT), 2026 2nd round (SAG) and 2026 3rd round (Miss) to Peterborough for Beck. As host of the next Memorial Cup tournament, the Spirit are guaranteed to take part and they understandably want to perform well in front of their fans. Beck wasn’t their only acquisition yesterday as they also landed defenseman Jorian Donovan for a staggering eight draft picks.

This will be Beck’s second Memorial Cup tournament and he’ll be hoping his team performs better than the Petes last year. Peterborough finished third in the round robin, getting pounded 10-2 by Kamloops, losing 6-3 to Seattle and beating the champions to be Remparts 4-2. They surprised Kamloops with a 5-4 OT win in the tie breaker before being beaten in the tournament semi-final 4-1. Over five games in the tournament Beck recorded three points, including a goal.
The Habs’ 2022 2nd round pick (33rd overall) has 16 goals and 30 points in 25 games with Peterborough this season and represented Canada at the World Junior Championships for the second year in a row. Last year, he was part of the gold medal winning team and was the only returnee in the side that was eliminated in the quarterfinals this time around.

Another Canadiens’ prospect, Florian Xhekaj, could also be on the move in the OHL as he’s having a great season and, just like his older brother, brings a lot of physicality to the game.
