After stealing two points from the Islanders thanks to Samuel Montembeault and Sean Monahan, the Canadiens flew to Pittsburgh yesterday in readiness of today’s duel with the Penguins. Prior to the team’s practice, Alex Newhook hit the ice for the first time after suffering a high ankle sprain at the end of November. He continued his one ice rehab with the team’s director of hockey development, Adam Nicholas. Three players skipped the team’s practice as they were receiving treatment: Sean Monahan, Jake Evans and David Savard.
After coming off the ice, head coach Martin St-Louis confirmed Jake Allen would be in net to face Crosby and co. Allen has taken on the Penguins nine times in his career and has a 4-4-1 with a 3.75 GAA and a .880 SP. As Alex Nedeljkovic faced the Panthers last night, Tristan Jarry should man the Penguins’ net. Pittsburgh’s number one goaltender has faced the Canadiens seven times and he’s got a 4-1-1 record, a 2.84 GAA and a .902 SP.
Tonight will be the second of three meetings between the two teams this season, the Penguins won the first one 4-3 at the Bell Centre on December 13th. Brendan Gallagher will not be playing tonight as he’ll be serving the first of a five-game suspension after his illegal hit to Adam Pelech’s head. As per the terms of the collective bargaining agreement, Gallagher will be forfeiting $169,270.85$ in salary.
The Penguins are not having a great season and may very well miss the playoffs for the second year in a row, they’ve got a 3-4-3 record in their last ten games and will also be skating in their last game before the All-Star break. In the last 27 games against the Canadiens, the host have got a 17-8-4 record.
