When training resumed in Brossard yesterday there was someone missing. The Sean Monahan era in Montreal is now over since has Kent Hughes said in his presser, there wasn’t enough certainty about his team to allow him to make a reasonable contract offer to Monahan and it therefore made sense to trade him for another asset, a first round pick this year and a conditional 3rd round pick in 2027 if the Jets go on to win the Stanley Cup this season.

While Monahan didn’t play a lot of games for the Canadiens (he lost a lot of last season to injury), he made his mark both in the locker room and with the fans. In a rebuild, when you know your team’s not going to win very much, it’s nice to have some players give you entertaining performances and Monahan did just that. Of late, he had been paired up with Juraj Slafkovsky and the young Slovak really liked playing with the veteran. He was vocal about the fact he would miss him at practice yesterday but wishes him well, as most fans do too. This morning, Slafkovsky was back on the first line with Suzuki and Caufield.

When asked how Monahan would be replaced in the line up considering the shortage of centers, Hughes replied Newhook should be ready to return in the near future and until then, players such as Condotta and Stephens could see time in the NHL. As expected, Condotta was called back up yesterday, and the Canadiens also announced a two-year, two-way contract for Brandon Gignac. The centerman has registered 43 points in 42 games in Laval this season and is now with the Canadiens. Drafted in the third round by the Devils back in 2016, Gignac has only played one NHL game in 2018-2019.

The Canadiens also announced that Samuel Montembeault was the recipient of the Molson Cup for the month of January, a nomination that was hardly surprising given how well he’s played. Martin St-Louis has confirmed Mountembeault will be in net on Tuesday.. Brendan Gallagher won’t be in the line-up as he’s still got four games to serve in his five-game suspension. As for Newhook, he will travel with the team, but he's not yet ready to play.
