Alex Newhook was acquired on the eve of the draft last season, and he was just starting to develop some chemistry with Nick Suzuki when he suffered a high ankle sprain. Two months later, the Newfoundlander is ready to return, and his timing couldn’t have been better with the Canadiens being so thin at center. Sure, Newhook played better on the wing, but for now, and considering how well Juraj Slafkovsky has progressed, it would be a shame to take him off the top line. It was one thing to do it to pair him with a Sean Monahan who was firing on all cylinders, but it’s quite another to do it to pair him with Jake Evans.
Yesterday at practice, Newhook was taking reps on the first power play unit, filling the massive hole Monahan left behind. Samuel Montembeault will be in net for a second time in a row, something we haven’t seen in quite some time and up front, Suzuki will try to keep his 5-game point streak alive while Caufield will do the same for his ten-game point streak.
The Stars come to town with the third most productive attack in the league having produced 189 goals so far. To have any chance of winning the Canadiens will have to provide a real 60-minute effort since Dallas’ most productive period if the third, they’ve scored 70 goals in that period alone.
Today will be the second game of the season against the Stars. The Canadiens won the first duel 4-3 and this will be the 143rd game between the two sides. So far, Montreal has an 80-39-21-2 record against the lone star state team but it has won six of the last 10 games featuring both teams. Dallas has just had its four-game winning streak stopped by the Leafs in a 5-4 defeat and will no doubt be looking to bounce back in the building in which they’ve won the last four games.
