Summary:
Tonight saw two “firsts” for the Yzerman era. Detroit scored 8 goals for the first time, and now they’ve won 6 straight for the first time since the GM returned to Motown.

To the Capitals credit, they kept at it. For years the Washington faithful thought that Backstrom was underrated because of the scoring that #8 was putting up. As I watched tonight, Nick has to be missed. He and Ovi connected countless times for a long time and Alex must feel like he’s missing a limb. The two were absolutely fantastic in tandem and Backstrom certainly is missed.

For Detroit, what an incredible game. The Wings sat short handed with a 2 goal lead at the end of the second and end up with a goal from the tandem of Copp and Compher. Those two do a lot of good things defensively, the play they made to get back to a 3 goal lead at the end of the second. That felt like a hammer that solidified the game even though there was another period left.

The tic tac goal courtesy of Kane, Larkin and Debrincat was a beauty. Larkin’s Brett Hull impression ripping a shot from one knee was just a final shock in a huge win for Detroit who have to be feeling good about where they’re at.

A word on Seider. It’s easy to forget what he brings to the game and how shocked a lot of fans were when Yzerman picked the German Dman. He’s blocking shots and making plays all game long. Because of the lead he was able to shut down a little early tonight but his steady game combined with Walman’s energy and skating have made for an exciting pairing.

Let me know your thoughts on how things went tonight. The Islanders are up next and that’s still another “must win” game. There just aren’t going to be nights off until the post season card is written in ink. Fantastic efforts across the board and Veleno showed again the speed he’s added and a flashback of the kind of scoring he was doing before his pro career. Another night where the fans are leaving with Journey blasting down from the rafters is a good night for Hockeytown.

Detroit First Period goals:

At 5:45, Veleno protected the puck as he skated across the slot and found Gostisbehere who scored his 8th of the season. Perron with 2nd apple. 1-0

At 16:20 Rasmussen got the puck to Compher. J.T. Found Raymond in front of the goal who got his 17th of the season. 2-0 DET

Shots: 12-5 DET
Score: 2-0 DET

Detroit Red Wings Second Period goals:

At 4:44 Perron intercepted an outlet pass by the Caps, got the puck to Veleno. JV stick handled to the middle of the O zone and roofed a shot restoring Detroit’s 2 goal lead. 3-1 DET

At 9:01, after failing to convert on a power play, Raymond found Gostisbehere skating up the middle of the offensive zone and the Dman got his second of the night. 4-1 DET

With 13 seconds left, while Detroit was short handed, Copp and Compher found themselves 2 on 1 heading down the ice. Copp passed over to J.T. And a quick rip restored a 3 goal lead. The who play was started by a block from Seider. 5-2 DET

Shots: 23-11 DET
Score: 5-2 DET

Third Period Detroit goals

At 4:31 Fabbri benefitted from the insane passing ability of Patrick Kane who found #14 with his blade on the ice for a deflection on the power play. Sprong with 2nd apple. 6-2 DET

At 11:49 Larkin skated into the O zone with Kane and Debrincat. Quick give and go with Kane turned into a quick pass to Debrincat for a tic-tac-goal to restore a 4 goal lead. 7-3 DET

With 5:49 left Raymond found Larkin with a cross ice pass and Larkin did his best Brett Hull impression. Maata with 2nd assist. 8-3 DET

Shots: 31-20 DET
Score: 8-3 DET
