Summary:
Today I went all the way back to the 2019 season when I first took over the Detroit blog. I just read the titles. It was not an easy start. Yzerman walked into his role as GM, drafted a defenseman that had people freaking out because they didn’t know who he was, and the team was absolutely brutal to watch. The season got cut short, and it was just probably the most awkward time to try and get your feet wet. Almost 5 years and over 1000 blogs later, tonight had a very familiar feeling.
Here’s the good news, Washington didn’t move further ahead in the standings. The Islanders did, however, manage to defeat the Panthers. Philly also failed to win. Unfortunately the Isles have a game in hand, New Jersey is just one point behind them, and there’s one less game for Detroit to make a move.
There’s no point in piling on. Kane wasn’t available, Walman is still out. Sprong did make it into the lineup but the chasm between where Detroit is as a team and where Carolina is was just far too overwhelming. I’m running out of ways to look at this, and don’t want to add to the frustrations of the fans or the team.
Touch base in the comments. Let me know where you’re at and what you’re expecting in the final 9. Is there any returning player or locker room speech that can shift the narrative at this point? Always grateful to hear from each of you.
